The first season of Boston Blue has come to an end, and “Patrol” was one of the better finales we’ve watched this year. Season 1 Episode 20 was full of drama with Lena getting shot and meeting her biological father for the first time. That last bit was an emotional reunion, and we may or may not have shed some tears.
The episode also gave us another Maria Baez appearance, and her scenes with Danny were much happier than the last time they were together. However, their scenes were a little surprising with the news that Danny may be switching jobs. Would he really walk away from being a detective?
Finally, “Patrol” left us with a major cliffhanger and has us wondering about Lena and Brian’s relationship. Will it be able to survive him moving to D.C. (among other things)??? We review Boston Blue Season 1, Episode 20 below!
One Big, Happy, Kind of Confusing Family

After the last episode, we knew Lena wanted to meet her biological father and it was going to happen this week. However, we really weren’t prepared for how it was going to happen. We didn’t think Lena would finally meet her dad while in the hospital recovering from being shot. What a way to be introduced to your biological father. There were a lot of tears in this scene. Not just from Lena, but from us, too.
Sonequa Martin-Green was amazing here, and we could feel everything Lena was going through. She was still in pain from the shooting and trying to process her biological father missing everything in her life. She was also hopeful about a new start with Chris. He can’t make up for everything, but he wants to be a part of her life. Like Lena said, it’s a start. He wants to be in her life, and that definitely means something.
Chris showing up to the Silvers’ party at the end with Kristina also meant something.
We were kind of surprised by how well everyone fit together. Kristina was welcomed into the Silvers’ home and seemed happy to have a sister. This party at the Silvers showed us that Lena really is the glue that holds everyone together, and we’ve enjoyed watching her story play out with her siblings over the last season. We love that the Silvers show that biology isn’t the only way that you can be a family. Sarah and Ben are no less Lena’s family because they aren’t biologically related to Lena.
We’re looking forward to seeing more of this “one big, happy, kind of confusing family” next season.
Danny Reagan: Future Commissioner?

Danny Reagan had quite the episode as well. Not quite as big as Lena, but he did have do a tour as a rookie, which was fantastic.
We loved seeing him partnered with Sean, which turned out to be what Danny needed after seeing Lena get shot. Sean knew that Danny was hurting, and the best person to help him was Maria Baez. We were wondering if she was going to make another appearance before the season ended. Her last appearance kind of left us confused about where their relationship stands, and “Patrol” cleared things up. They love each other, and they’re committed to putting in the work to stay together.
Danny revealed to Baez that he’s been thinking about his future. He told Sean earlier that he’s not cut out to be Commissioner, but then tells Lena he’s thinking about taking the sergeant’s exam. And then maybe one day he’ll be commissioner. We don’t know if we can picture Danny as the commissioner, and honestly, we don’t know if we can see him being a sergeant, either. He’s been a detective for so long and changing positions would really shake things up.
We know he’s doing this for Baez so he can spend more time with her, and we love that. We really do. He’s putting in the work for them to stay together. But how will this affect his partnership with Lena? Because we love seeing Danny and Lena work together, and we’re not ready to give that up yet.
Season Finale Cliffhanger

So it couldn’t be a season finale without a cliffhanger.
We knew something bad was going to happen to Brian when he wasn’t at the party with the rest of the Silver/Reagans. There was also too much time in the episode, and we’ve watched too much TV to know that seasons don’t end with everyone happy. So, of course, Brian’s car was slammed into and he was left to die in the river.
So that’s the way the season ends?! Will they find Brian before it’s too late? And will they find the person that hit him? Because it was obviously intentional. And if he lives, will he still go to D.C.? Will he decide to stay in Boston and maybe he’ll become Lena’s partner with Danny becoming a sergeant? There are a lot of questions here, and we’ll be waiting for next season to find out the answers.
Other Thoughts:

- Seeing Joe was a welcome surprise! And it was fitting that he showed up because he knows a little about what Lena’s going through with your biological family for the first time as an adult.
- We’re interested in seeing how Mae’s election will go. How will it affect her family? What if she doesn’t win?
- Sarah was amazing in how she handled Phoebe’s mom. Sarah wanted Julie to see how her actions could cause problems in the future with Phoebe. And we’re glad that Sarah and Seth get to have Phoebe full time now!
- Sean asking if BPD will reimburse him for his earbud was hilarious. Jonah’s right: there’s no chance he’s getting reimbursed.
- “This man shot my sister. Bring him in alive so I can bury him under the jail.” Yes, Sarah!
- “My fiance talking to my ex-wife about my daughter. Pretty sure there’s a therapist somewhere with that on their bingo card.”
Boston Blue will return in the fall for new episodes on CBS.
