Love Island USA Season 8 hasn’t even premiered, and already the fandom is a disaster.
As a long-time viewer of reality TV and fangirl, I’ve been aware of Love Island and its multiple spin-offs for a while. But it wasn’t until Season 6 of Love Island USA that it really started entering all circles of the internet, including mine. But by the time that it got to me, Season 6 was ending. When Season 7 came around, I jumped on the show, fell in love with Olandria, and was really shocked by the islanders that were removed, the islanders that stayed, and the dumpster fire of the online discourse.
For Season 8, Love Island USA decided to get ahead of the fandom online discourse dumpster fire by releasing a statement. They said, “The Villa runs on good vibes, and so does this community. We love seeing your reactions, opinions, and debates, but everyone deserves to feel safe and respected. This is a space for fun, not negativity – so keep in mind, keep it positive, and remember: this is LOVE island!”

The message didn’t land as Love Island USA probably intended. Even I can admit that my first reaction was not so much of the Peacock show trying to curtail internet drama, death threats, and division amongst the viewers. I thought that this was them saying that the cast was going to be chopped and that we better prepare ourselves. But even then, it’s just reality TV, and I don’t know these contestants, and I’m just here for a good time, not a long time.
Then the cast dropped.
Peacock was smart to keep the cast revelation as close to the show coming out on June 2nd. But it took absolutely no time for internet sleuths to find everything about these islanders to the point where maybe they should be employed by Peacock to do background checks. While everyone was doing that, videos of Vasana using racial slurs popped up on the internet, and she was rightfully removed from the Villa.

It’s the online discourse in the first 48 hours of the cast being revealed that makes me side-eye the fandom.
These islanders were scrutinized from head to toe. Their bodies were put under a microscope. Their social media was put under a microscope. And when they didn’t find anything, AI and fake managers entered the chat. Islanders were shown to be in controversial photos of all sorts. People were even pretending to be the managers of these islanders, refuting the claims being made. And it got to the point where family members had to speak up.
As a long-time fangirl who has been part of multiple fandoms since she first discovered the spaces at 12, this kind of over-the-top scrutiny and vitriol for vitriol’s sake sucks the life out of Love Island USA completely. Because yes, hold people accountable for the trash things they say. That’s 100% something everyone should be behind. And yes, this is reality TV, so you can expect some messiness. But this isn’t mess anymore.
The Love Island USA fandom is seemingly built on not just controversy, but tearing these people apart and down. And they do this while picking an islander they don’t even know to defend until their dying breath. Doesn’t matter if they have to destroy another islander (aka a real person) to metaphorically win an imaginary pissing contest. They have to win.
Love Island USA is reality TV. It’s all carefully curated, and everyone has producers. Basically, it’s fake. It’s always been fake. But the people on our screens are also real people. They’re not playthings that fans can destroy, throw away, and then start the cycle again next season. That’s not fandom. That’s just cruelty for cruelty’s sake.
Love Island USA Season 8 premieres June 2nd on Peacock.
