Legends of Tomorrow SDCC 2016 Interview: Dominic Purcell

Mick Rory didn’t want to be a hero. In many ways, he still doesn’t. And, yet, as Dominic Purcell tells us in this San Diego Comic-Con interview, the Mick Rory of the Pilot is nothing like the man we left at the end of the season, and, even less like the man we’ll see in Season 2.

That, of course, doesn’t mean he’s singing the same tune as the rest of the Legends of Tomorrow. Mick is still Mick, and Dominic confirms that “he doesn’t have any real connection to any of it” and that “I don’t think he’s fallen into the team,” so the real mystery of the season is really why he’s with the team, when he can say “fuck it, I’m out of here.”

In a way, this makes Mick Rory one of -if not the most interesting character in a show filled with people with good intentions. Especially as you contrast him with some of those people- Ray Palmer, for example. Dominic promises we’re going to see more of that in Season 2, because “it works,” and the show, as it grows, will take great care to write towards the thing that just click.

As for his character, don’t think he’s going away anytime soon, or that he’s going to turn into a completely different guy, have a change of heart or suddenly go full-on hero. “We need someone like Rory to keep this show sparky and energized.”

But – Mick is the guy who stays. And the reason why is because “There’s a love there, but he doesn’t know it yet. He’s not aware of it. He’s not that self-evolved.”

It’s going to be fun to see the journey that takes him to that realization.
