When I think of Angie Thomas, I think of what a genius writer she is. The author makes us think and opens our eyes to the world around us.
Her book, On The Come Up, is absolutely one of the best books that we have read this year. Back in February, it was announced that the book would come to the big screen. We’ve been waiting and waiting for any news on the adaptation and we finally have some.
Kay Oyegun, writer and producer for This is Us, has signed on to adapt the book for the silver screen. She is in high demand (which shocks none of us cause like she writes for This Is Us) and was also recently tapped to adapt Tomi Adeyemi‘s Children of Blood and Bone for Lucasfilm.
On The Come Up has also added a producer, Angie Thomas herself.
On The Come Up focuses on Bri, a young rapper and the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died just before making it big. Her father’s legend makes him a hard act to follow, but between Bri being bullied and watching her mother struggle after losing her job, she pours out her frustration into songs that become big viral hits.
George Tillman Jr. will direct the movie adaptation.
