The Oscars Do it Again: The Nominations Are Out and We Hate Them

At this point, I’m not even surprised. Or disappointed, really. I’m not numb, or determined, I’m not inspired to do better, or any of those motivational things. I’m just hella angry.

Because, really, what do we have to do? As women? As minorities? How can we break into this old boy’s club? When will the stories aimed at us be recognized? When will we matter?

The answer seems to be: Not soon, so don’t hold your breath.

Greta Gerwig, a white woman, can’t even get a directing nod for the outstanding Little Women. Nah, only writing nods, and hey, don’t complain, at least you get a Best Picture nomination! And that’s much better than Jennifer Lopez or Lupita Nyong’o can hope for.

And let’s not even go into how Frozen II, which is arguably better than Frozen, was shut out because …eh …because sequels are bad but 18372732 movies about the same comic book villain need to get rewarded over and over again?

The message is loud, and clear: the only stories that matter are the ones meant for white men, and the white men who create and star in those stories. The rest? Well, if there are even women nominated, it almost feels like that’s just because there are categories only for women.

And I’m done trying to use this as motivation. Let’s just burn this system to the ground. It’s way past time.
