Sweet Magnolias has quickly become one of my new favorite shows this year, and I’m eagerly and anxiously awaiting for Netflix to renew it for a second season (and more!) after binging it in a single day. Seriously, Netflix, any day now would be great.
It’s one of those feel-good shows that’s perfect for a time like this, where things are bleak and uncertain, and it’s the perfect way to escape to the beautiful small town of Serenity.
The season finale left viewers with many questions — who’s in the car?! — and plenty of storylines to play with in the second season, including some sizzling romances that have been teased in the first season.
I don’t know if it’s the Young Adult fan in me or what, but there’s something about teen ships that are so intriguing. And, obviously, after watching Sweet Magnolias‘ first season, I need to see Ty and Annie get together.
I mean, just look at them. They have all of the makings of an epic slowburn, and you know how much we love those here at Fangirlish.
Luckily, I’m not alone in my sentiment. A number of actors on the show have voiced their desire for it, including Ty himself Carson Rowland.
“Carson as a viewer wants them together,” Rowland told Hollywood Life. “I was talking to Sherryl and I said, “Name two characters that are like them in terms of their relationship.” She goes, “They’re the modern-day Jim and Pam.” That’s so true. Because the first couple seasons of The Office, everyone wanted them together, but they weren’t not together. I would love for them [Ty and Annie] to get together, but I also love the conflict that brings when they’re not together. The audience wants something so much, but they’re just not getting it. Maybe they’ll get it down the road, maybe we won’t. We’ll see.”
Speaking from experience with these slowburns, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. And, most importantly, assuming Netflix renews this gem of a show. Which they’d better.
In the first season of Sweet Magnolias, we saw how Annie secretly pined for Ty, one of her closest friends, while he was oblivious to it all. Boys, am I right?
But after Annie got drunk at a party, Ty whisked Annie away to get her home safe, and Annie kissed him. Ty was shocked, but it’s important to note that he didn’t turn away when he saw it coming. Unlike when his younger brother Kyle tried to kiss Annie, and she turned her head immediately.
Ty was too freaked out to not have feelings. I’m sorry, but you don’t react like that if you don’t. Ultimately, Ty chose to ignore those feelings, even choosing to date CeCe to distract himself.
But what’s holding Ty back from pursuing romance with Annie? Rowland says it has to do with the fallout and the gossip that would come with getting romantic with one of his oldest friends. And considering Ty has a lot going on in his life at the moment, you can’t blame him.
“I think it’s the gossip,” Rowland said. “I think there are just so many other things going on. I don’t think a relationship is really in the forefront of his mind at the moment. He does have a relationship with CeCe, but that’s more of just a distraction. Ty just cannot catch a break, and he just wants the world to be simple. He wants it to be the way it was before when Annie was just his friend and his mom and dad were still together. I think adding a relationship to that is really just too much for Ty at the moment. I don’t think he wants that. I think he wants to focus on baseball.”
Following the events of the season finale — where either Annie or Ty could be the passenger hurt in the car — there’s no way that he’s going to continue to ignore those feelings. After all, life and death situations have a way of opening your eyes.
Now, it’s just up to Netflix to renew Sweet Magnolias so we can see this all play out.
Sweet Magnolias is now streaming on Netflix.
