There’s so little time left for A Discovery Of Witches season two! We’re sure that you’re going to love this season as much as we do. In preparation for the premiere, Fangirlish had a chance to chat with Steven Cree, our beloved Gallowglass, who we will meet this season. He told us many secrets about this season, including some gifts about season 3 as well as a thing or two about Outlander.
Here we go!
As you know, Gallowglass is a vampire, and we imagine that it must not have been easy for him to see Matthew with a witch at his side, treating her like his wife, with such a great sense of belonging. We wanted to know Steven’s opinion on this and his response made us love Gallowglass even more.
He’s delighted to see Matthew again as he had been wondering where Matthew had disappeared to. And of course, Gallowglass is very fond of his uncle. He certainly raises an eyebrow on seeing Matthew with Diana, but he is also intrigued by this coupling. Unlike the other vampires of his time he is a bit more open and accepts Diana with Matthew far more readily than the others, probably helped by the fact he is instantly fond of ‘Auntie’ Diana.
Gallowglass is someone very close to Matthew and, by extension, Diana, but he has just met her. We had to ask Steven how the relationship between the two of them would evolve and we feel from his response that Gallowglass is going to love Diana as much as we do. because who can know her and not love her?
Their bond and friendship deepens as the season progresses and they have an easy and jovial connection. Gallowglass understands Matthew in a way Diana doesn’t yet but wants the best for both of them. He wants to warn Diana about what she is taking on but also to protect Matthew. I think by the end of season 2 we should see that they have developed a real fondness for each other and so saying goodbye is a real wrench for Gallowglass.
We can’t tell you much about this season – yet – but we’ll tell you this: in the season there are some clues that only readers of the book will understand. So we want to know … whether the relationship between Diana, Matthew and Gallowglass was going to stick to the books or go to go its own surprising path. And Steven’s response was … mysterious. Judge for yourself.
You’ll have to wait and seem but there are always differences with book to TV adaptations. Whatever happens I hope the book fans and those who haven’t read the books will enjoy it equally.
We tried it, folks! But, from here, we can assure you and Steven that everyone, both those who read and those who haven’t read the book, are going to love this season. That’s the wonderful thing about this show, that you feel like you can enjoy the story no matter what because the story is about magic but also about love, power, envy, betrayal, family … and we can all relate to that.
Have we already told you how much we love Gallowglass? Well, we love him! We love him and we will support him no matter what! So we decided to ask Steven if we would get to know anything about his character’s past this season, and how he got so close to Matthew. What he replied raised our expectations for the season even more.
Gallowglass is shrouded in mystery and much of that mystery will remain, as it should. But I think there are little snippets of information as to why their bond is so strong. Gallowglass is loyal to the end for Matthew and indeed will put his happiness before his own. Honour is his middle name.
In Steven’s responses you can clearly see and feel that he admires his character and loves to bring it to life. So we had to find out what he admires most about our dear Gallowglass. And his answer only reassured us that Steven is the one for this role, he was simply born for it.
He is a man of honour which is hugely admirable. I think the fact he is such a complex man and has many different facets to his personality makes him a lot of fun to play. He can be gentle, funny, emotional, sensitive, intuitive but when called upon he is also a fierce and formidable warrior. He doesn’t necessarily always say loads but I like that about him too. He’s not a man for huge monologues.
We always focus more on storylines but we’re also very interested in how this experience was for Steven, if he enjoyed it and if we could count on him for season 3. And in his response it was clear to us that it was a very nice experience for him and that inevitably marked him. Also, he left us a gift about season 3!
It’s been a fantastic experience. I was very excited to join the show having been a big fan of season 1 and to work alongside such great actors as the show consists of. We shot in some stunning locations and I got to take part in some fantastical, epic storylines. It’s not every day you get to play a 400 year old vampire.
We’ve been filming season 3 for a few months now and in many ways it’s like playing a different character as it’s 400 years on and Gallowglass has changed in some ways.
And there we have the first teaser for season 3! The years will change Gallowglass, so we’ll see some character development and, to be honest, we can’t wait!
Before A Discovery Of Witches we met Steven on Outlander as Ian Senior – and frankly, we fell in love with him on that show. We needed to know what Steven thinks about the differences between Gallowglass and Ian Senior. And you just have to read what he told us …
Well I think Gallowglass is a far more dynamic and swash buckling character than Ian but that’s partly through circumstance and the different stages in their life they are at. Gallowglass is a soldier of fortune and very much a free spirit who is still living for the adventure and spontaneity such a life can offer. There are similarities too, though in that they are both fiercely loyal and have a gentle quality about them whilst often being the ones keeping their calm when others are losing theirs.
Ian though is far more open and we know what he’s about and that he’s very content at this stage in his life. Gallowglass is a far more unknown character and indeed I think there is a certain sadness about him lurking just behind the eyes. Being a vampire can be a lonely and painful business too.
And, since we met Steven in Outlander, it was inevitable to ask him about the filming of season 6. We all want to see Ian Senior again in Outlander, but will it happen? This is what Steven told us.
I genuinely have no idea if I’ll be back for season 6. I know they wanted me back for season 5, but it clashed with ADOW sadly, and we couldn’t make it work. I would always go back if they wanted me to and if my schedule allows it. Ian Murray is close to my heart as are the Outlander fan base.
He’s so cute! You’re close to our hearts too, Steven!
And this has been our interview with Steven Cree about A Discovery of Witches. I hope you enjoyed it and that you are looking forward to this season 2 even more. Fasten your seat belts because … you are not ready for what is coming!
