Fellow members of the Clone Club, we have gotten an unexpected surprise. It would appear that we are heading back into the world of Orphan Black.
It’s been almost ten years since the popular series aired on BBC America and we were caught completely off guard when the Orphan Black socials put out a message alerting us all to set an alarm because a special announcement was coming. Naturally, we were all running through our minds as to exactly what sort of surprise we would be getting and as it turns out an Orphan Black spinoff is coming.
Team Orphan Black released the following announcement on their socials. “Dear Clone Club, you’ve been with us from the moment Sarah Manning watched in horror as Beth Childs inexplicably jumped in front of a train. Then stole her purse and identity. You rode shotgun with the Sestras as they fought to protect themselves and their sisterhood against everything from Freaky Leekies to Proletheans to maniacal Neolutionists and Topside agents.
You celebrated the crazy moment, the wild twists and turns, the f-ked up science, the horror and the humor, and most of all the love that made Orphan Black what it was. You are the #CloneClub. So we wanted you to be the first to know that we’re continuing the story. Much in the Orphan Black universe remains in the black. In partnership with our intrepid friends at Boat Rocker and AMC, it’s time to go back in. Are you ready to go down the Rabbit Hole again?”
Yup, we know that release didn’t really give us a whole lot of information so we got a little Cosima and did some research. The Spinoff is titled Orphan Black: Echoes and according to Deadline the series is going to be set in the near future and “takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence. It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.”
Season one is set to have ten episodes with Anna Fishko at the helm as showrunner and executive producer. The original co-creator and director of Orphan Black, John Fawcett is also coming back for this one.
We’re happy to see that John is coming back but our biggest and most important question is, will Tatiana Maslany be returning? At this time none of the press releases give us any indication that she may be involved.
We realize there are a lot of possibilities with this spinoff and that new worlds are going to be explored but we just can’t picture an Orphan Black show where the main star of the original series isn’t part of it.
We were very big fans of Orphan Black and think Tatiana Maslany kicked ass playing every single clone onscreen. If we don’t get her in this new spinoff, we can’t say if we will be watching.
At the very least we should be getting our girl Cosima in the series seeing as she was crazy smart and knew all the science stuff. If Orphan Black: Echoes is in fact taking a “deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence” we can’t see that without Cosima and that’s facts.
There are still a ton of theories we can come up with for this spinoff and all of them involve Tatiana Maslany. We just don’t see it any other way and that’s a hill we will die on because Sestras are forever.
Orphan Black: Echoes is in pre-production as of right now and is set for a 2023 release on AMC+.
