Surface is a show that catches you from the first scene. You just can’t stop looking and wondering who Sophie is, what’s real in her life, and how many secrets she hides. We had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Sophie) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (James) about their experience on the show and the scenes they enjoyed the most.
Here we go!
Surface is the story of Sophie, an upper-class woman from San Francisco who has suffered a head injury that has caused profound amnesia. The most likely cause is a suicide attempt. As Sophie tries to piece together the broken pieces of her life with the help of her husband and her friends, she begins to question whether or not what she is told about her life is true.
Surface has numerous plot twists and a shocking love triangle in the background. It asks the viewer: what would you do if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets? The show is the story of a woman who discovers herself and tries to find out if we are predestined to become who we are, or if we can choose to be other people.
We asked Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Oliver Jackson-Cohen what moment in their character’s journey they wanted fans to see and… have you seen that moment yet or not? You would never guess their answers!
Additionally, we wanted to play the roles of Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Oliver Jackson-Cohen and were curious as to what character they would have liked to play if they weren’t Sophie and James. And we can only say… good choice!
Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Oliver Jackson-Cohen were a revelation and we loved interviewing them and hearing about their impressions and experience in Surface. It’s clear that they’re excited about the project and that they only hope that the fans enjoy the show as much as they enjoyed being part of it.
And of course, we do.
Surface airs Fridays on Apple TV+.
