HBO has released an official teaser trailer for The Last of Us and here at Fangirlish, we’ve been tearing it apart. Sure, we’re excited to see Pedro Pascal transform into Joel. And yes, Bella Ramsey is perfection as Ellie. But it’s the little details of this teaser trailer that really have us excited for what’s to come when it premires in 2023.
Here are 5 things you might’ve missed from the official teaser trailer for The Last of Us!
1. Symptoms if you’re infected
The post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us is a little differnt than any other world you’ve seen. The Cordyceps brain infection transforms regular humans into a living fungus that covers the body, sprouts from the face when matured, and that possesses incredible strength. They are main antagonist of the story and make a clicking sound when near.

2. Fireflies symbol being covered up
The Fireflies are a militia group in The Last of Us that are continously trying to revolt against he military oppression in quarantine zones. With their numbers increasing comes the military losing control in a world torn apart by the fungal plague. That breeds fights, repression, and each side trying to one up each other. Oh, also the Fireflies are trying to find a cure. That’s huge.

3. Queer goodness in the form of Ellie and Riley
An essential part of Ellie’s story is her romance with Riley. Ellie was born in the post-apocalyptic world so new and lovely experiences are far and few in between. So this one, it matters and it helps make Ellie who she is. And it’s made even better that the ever talented Storm Reid, who needs to get all the roles, is playing Riley.

4. Tommy being there during the fall
Played by Gabriel Luna, Tommy is Joel’s brother. He was there when the plague first hit and he was part of the reason why Joel survived. This scene looks to be them finding each other again after a car accident that leaves Joel’s daughter Sarah injured. Like Joel, he’s a survivor and will do what he must for his brother.

5. Nick Offerman as Bill
Bill is a survivor of the fungal plague that has taken over the United States of America. He has an uneasy alliance with Joel and Ellie. And it seems like he’s found them in a trap that is most certainly of his own making because of how savvy and paranoid he is. It’s made even better by the fact that he’s played by Nick Offerman.
