Though Amy Schumer may not be our favorite person, we’ve always made a choice to not speak on that. That being said, one thing that we have found gross is peoples comments on her face during her press tour for Life & Beth, the internet decided to do what it does.
It decided to be mean.
The internet made comments about how full her face was and a lot of people called her face “puffier than normal” which is really cruel. We don’t know what anyone else is going through.
The comedian took to Instagram to talk about just why that is. A few weeks ago while talking about Life & Beth, the comedian wrote on Instagram (On February 15th), “And you’re right it is puffier than normal right now. I have endometriosis an auto immune disease that every woman should read about. There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now but I’m okay. Historically women’s bodies have barely been studied medically compared to men.”
She continued, “The book “all in her head” does a good job explaining this. I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation. But I wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for self love and acceptance of the skin you’re in. Like every other women/person some days I feel confident and good as hell and others I want to put a bag over my head.”
And then on the 23rd, Amy announced in an interview with the News Not Noise newsletter about what has been going on with her medically.
“While I was doing press on camera for my Hulu show, I was also in MRI machines four hours at a time, having my veins shut down from the amount of blood drawn and thinking I may not be around to see my son grow up. So finding out I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I’m healthy was the greatest news imaginable,” she said.
She added, “It has been a crazy couple weeks for me and my family. Aside from fears about my health, I also had to be on camera having the internet chime in. But thank God for that. Because that’s how I realized something was wrong.”
She discussed a little bit about why she came forward, as no one really has to reveal anything about their medical history. It is their own personal business, so for Amy to come forward, was definitely something that wasn’t necessary. We can’t imagine what it would be like for the world to criticize you, so as much as we say we wouldn’t do it, we’re thankful that Amy or anyone does.
Being open about what you are going through, can make other people who are going through the same thing feel less alone. Amy finished off the interview by saying, “Everyone is struggling with something. Maybe we can all be a little kinder to each other and ourselves.”
Kindness counts and well, that’s some advice we all should take. Amy included. Let’s all stop shaming each other. We don’t know the battle someone else is going through.
