We’re back! The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day” is a really entertaining episode in which Lucy Chen demonstrates why she deserves the promotion that no one wanted to give her and Chenford has us on the ground. Ready?
Here we go!
Mean Girls in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day”
We start with the elephant in the room of The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day”: Nyla and Angela’s attitude towards Lucy. We don’t like it at all. AT ALL. And not exactly because of what they tell her to do.
At the end of the day, Angela and Nyla have more rank and Lucy as an agent is there to help not investigate, they can’t make an exception to this because Lucy is her friend. Although it seems too exaggerated to have her watching a vomit for hours. That seems more like something they should order a P1, not a P2 like Lucy. So, even though Angela and Nyla’s attitude is borderline and seems too out of character for them, we consider it fair game.
Our real problem is the lost opportunity. The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day” could have shown how Angela and Nyla supported Lucy regarding her test result, explaining her own experiences and helping her to do better next time. You know, women supporting women because we don’t see too much of that and we really need it.
However, we were made to feel that the way Nyla and Angela treated Lucy was like some kind of twisted, unfair punishment. This punishment makes Lucy feel worse because we have to remember that she has overly demanding parents and that attitude surely reminds her of the disappointment that Lucy knows her parents feel towards her. That doesn’t help Lucy at all.
We assume that all this is a much bigger plan that we cannot see in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day.” Maybe a bright future for Lucy or for her to face how having overly demanding parents influences her daily life but, if this is the case, we need them to start giving some clues because our baby doesn’t deserve everything she’s suffering.
That said, playing devil’s advocate here, Tim is also a bit harsh with Aaron but, unlike what happens with Lucy, Tim was on a mission to test his performance on the street and this attitude fits him somewhat because he was always like that, not like Angela and Nyla.
Chenford and Blind Trust in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day”
Tim is well aware of how Lucy feels in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day.” He knows her and he knows that she is not well and that she feels like a big failure. That’s why he is there for Lucy, to support her, to joke with her, to try to make her forget what happened in that exam, and to be aware that she is an extraordinary police officer and that better days will come.
And we love that. But what we liked the most in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day” was the scene in the hospital. Tim is worried sick and goes straight to see Lucy. Everyone is there, but Tim doesn’t greet them, he goes straight into Lucy’s room because he needs to know that she’s okay. He needs to see her, he needs to hold her, he needs to feel her in her arms. She is his priority and everything else can wait.
When he sees Lucy, when Tim checks that she’s okay, he tries to make light of the matter, joking, and relief permeates his entire voice. Lucy is fine, at least physically, but not emotionally. If that man dies… but Tim is there, right next to Lucy, as always. They will get through it together. They can get through everything together.
Lucy pulls herself into his arms, completely showing her vulnerability, closes her eyes, and letting Tim wrap her in his arms and comfort her, feeling completely safe in Tim’s arms, feeling loved.
The trust that Lucy shows in this moment of The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day” to Tim and the way he closes his eyes once he has her in his arms, feeling her, make this moment one of the most intimate and beautiful of the couple.
A Bad Teacher…
The other turning point in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day” is Nolan and Celina. Nolan hasn’t been a TO that stood out. We barely saw him give any valuable advice to Celina beyond “observe and follow your instinct.” So Nyla is absolutely right: Celina’s mistake is Nolan’s fault.
Celina didn’t have to know that she shouldn’t mention the possibility of a serial killer. Nolan, like his TO, should have warned her, but he didn’t and the consequence is that Celina screws up and doesn’t stop feeling guilty for it, in addition to paying the price. And we didn’t see Nolan apologize to her.
It’s time for Nolan to learn to be a better TO.
Other Stuff in The Rookie 6×04 “Training Day”
- We like that they’re following up on Aaron’s therapy. He’s ready to get back to work but he still hasn’t completely gotten over what happened to him. It’s a work in progress and that’s just how it is in real life.
- If they wanted us to feel any indignation for the woman who was planning to kill that pig of her husband, they didn’t get it #sorrynotsorry.
- Bailey praising Lucy was cool! She deserves all the praise.
- Lucy deserves that promotion more than anyone and what she did in this episode is just more proof of that.
- Melissa’s performance, how she showed her feelings in that scene, the way her voice cracks… wow! Just wow!
- The action and tension of this episode are on point!
- The parallels between the Chenford scene in the hospital and the one when Lucy was kidnapped.
- The kiss on the forehead killed us.
- Celina speaking Spanish! Olé!
