The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery is here! Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point” offers an exciting infiltration mission, a bit of political set-up, and an ending that had me yelling. Black alert, y’all. Let’s jump into my review of Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point.”
The Return of Mr. Saru
Everyone is happy when Mr. Saru returns to Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point!” It is on brand for Saru to rise to the occasion when presented with a dangerous mission, but his diplomatic skill set does make him the logical choice. I also appreciate that he and President T’Rina acknowledge the difficulty of their positions and how those positions might come into conflict with their relationship. I do not envy their position. I know I could not make the same choices if I found myself in the same situation, so I commend them for their ability to look at this dire situation with logic and a healthy dose of trepidation. Saru and T’Rina are precious in their parting. Surely they won’t break all our hearts with this one, right? Right?! I shall wait with fear and trembling until our series finale.
Additionally, President Rillak is back! Rillak is one of the best additions to Star Trek: Discovery, so I’m always happy to have her back on my screen. I’m eager to see what becomes of all this political maneuvering with the Breen. Speaking of the Breen, let’s talk about this infiltration of the Breen ship.
Covert Ops
Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point” gives us an exciting infiltration mission. Covert ops are always fun to watch in my book. The Breen are somewhat easy to infiltrate, you’d think, with everyone looking pretty much alike. And yet, there are some great nuances that Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point” brings out. One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most in this final season of Star Trek: Discovery is that we get to see Michael use her xenoanthropology skills. Her understanding of these cultures has been invaluable in their quest for the Progenitors’ technology, as well as their dealings with the Breen. Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point” is no different.
It’s nice to see Rhys and Adira get some action on this mission as well. Rhys gives a great action vibe and Adira gets the opportunity to stretch themselves. Adira does great on this mission. I especially like that Adira volunteered themselves as opposed to being told to go on this mission. It shows their growing confidence and in truth, they are the logical choice for the mission. Watching the Space Dads affirm Adira and the way they accept their child’s growth is sweet as well. We need more healthy family dynamics on television, please, and thank you!
Additionally, on our covert ops mission, we see Book leaning into his greatest strength, his charm. Even when you can’t see his face at all, he turns on the charm to create a distraction, which amuses me. I have more thoughts on Book and Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point,” but that’s worth its own section. More on that in a moment.
Moll and Michael’s Choice
Moll’s intensity in Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point” is fascinating to me. Moll and Michael match each other in intensity, and are in some ways, two sides of the same coin. Moll fights fiercely for the one she loves, as does Michael. Moll is who Michael would be if Michael found herself in the same circumstances. I believe Michael sees that in Moll, which, aside from her Federation idealogy, is the reason she continues to offer her every opportunity possible to stop and join the Federation. Big props to Eve Harlow for absolutely killing it all season. I hope for her redemption by the season’s end.
Similarly, Michael wants nothing more than to protect those she loves, which is why she is willing to do the scary thing of jumping into the portal after Moll. That look she gives Booker before she jumps breaks my heart and sends me to cussing simultaneously. I knew as soon as Moll jumped that Michael would follow her, but gosh, it didn’t sting any less. I look forward to seeing their final showdown in our series finale.
Final Thoughts
Before I wrap on Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point,” I would be remiss if I failed to mention Rayner and his growth in this episode. Watching him finally take the captain’s chair again is lovely. Also, while he doesn’t do the warm emotional stuff like the rest of the Discovery crew, he does acknowledge that he respects their way of doing things. The little double tap on the arm of the chair is a nice spin on Rayner’s captain catchphrase.
As much as I enjoyed the action and excitement in Star Trek: Discovery 5×09 “Lagrange Point,” it is but set up for our series finale. The dominoes are in place. I hope the resolution we get is satisfactory, not just for this season, but the series. It’s a tall order, and I’m eager to see what we get in our finale. Even so, I’m not ready to say goodbye to the Discovery crew.
