Our Blurb: The Spring Girls is full of heart, strength, and vulnerability. We’re reminded just why Anna Todd is a force to be reckoned with this retelling of a classic. Congratulations Anna for once again making us fall in love with your books.
Summary: Four sisters desperately seeking the blueprints to life—the modern-day retelling of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women like only Anna Todd (After, Imagines) could do.
The Spring Girls—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—are a force of nature on the New Orleans military base where they live. As different as they are, with their father on tour in Iraq and their mother hiding something, their fears are very much the same. Struggling to build lives they can be proud of and that will lift them out of their humble station in life, one year will determine all that their futures can become.
The oldest, Meg, will be an officer’s wife and enter military society like so many of the women she admires. If her passion—and her reputation—don’t derail her.
Beth, the workhorse of the family, is afraid to leave the house, is afraid she’ll never figure out who she really is.
Jo just wants out. Wishing she could skip to graduation, she dreams of a life in New York City and a career in journalism where she can impact the world. Nothing can stop her—not even love.
And Amy, the youngest, is watching all her sisters, learning from how they handle themselves. For better or worse.
With plenty of sass, romance, and drama, The Spring Girls revisits Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women, and brings its themes of love, war, class, adolescence, and family into the language of the twenty-first century.
Overall Thoughts: Little Women has long been one of my favorite books. I can remember growing up and having my Grandma read the story. For some reason I just always wanted to be one of the sisters.
I will admit that I have always been nervous about retellings, but the thing I learned a long time ago about Anna Todd’s writing is that she writes a story that you can relate to. She makes you feel like the story could be happening to you, like the moments could be what you experience in your life.
The essence of Little Women is apparent in The Spring Girls. You get the fierceness of Meg, the strength of Jo, the vulnerability of Beth and Amy. You feel the connection between the sisters in the same way that you felt it in Little Women. She modernizes the characters, but never forgets the inspiration where they came from.
The Spring Girls will take you on an adventure – watching four distinct personalities grow, feel love, and feel pain. Todd reminds us with her characters that it is okay to be yourself, that it’s honorable to be loyal, and to put your family first. She reminds us that everyone has a purpose.
She reminds us of the importance of family.
She reminds of the importance of self.
The Spring Girls shows a new side in Todd’s writing. She reminds us that she’s a a force to be reckoned with in more genre’s than romance. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
Movie/TV Factor: We know that there are a lot of Little Women movies coming up, but to be honest – we’d be excited over The Spring Girls being made into a movie too. Why? Well, because we can relate to this version more. Todd did a great job of creating a fun, inspiring, powerful read. We’d love to see it translate into a movie.
Ship We’re Crushing On: We totally know we’re only supposed to pick one here… but Meg/Shia and Jo/Laurie are everything. If we had to choose 1 – it’s always going to be Jo/Laurie.
Overall Rating: 4.75
