‘Supernatural’ SDCC 2017 Interview: Jared Padalecki Talks Season 13 and Nephilim Jack

Supernatural, The CW’s longest running series, hit up San Diego Comic-Con this year for panels and interviews teasing what’s to come for Season 13 of the hit show. We got a chance to catch up with one half of the Winchester duo, Jared Padalecki who plays Sam Winchester, to talk about what’s next after losing his mom, his friend, and being put in charge of taking care of the nephilim Jack.

Sam and Dean are going to deal with the “death” of Mary and their new charge in distinctly different ways. While Dean is certain that his mom is dead and that Jack is a monster, Sam’s believes this isn’t the end and that there is still work to do.

“I don’t wanna say Sam and Dean are at odds cuz they’re not. But obviously they have a big disagreement about the task at hand, which is the nephilim child, Jack.”

Dean views Jack in terms of being black and white and has retreated into himself as a means of protecting himself from the pain of losing their mother and friend. And Sam, doesn’t want to retreat. He feels the pain that Dean does but is looking ahead with hope.

Padalecki said, “Sam is being Sam, being an optimist, believing that nurture can overcome nature.”

He went on to explain that Sam sees a lot of himself in Jack. Sam was supposed to do bad things and had this evil destiny set upon him via demon blood. But Sam survived and thrived. So he feels like Jack deserves a chance to do the same. And seeing Dean look upon Jack with such disdain, hurts him because he feels like his brother thinks the same of him.

“We see Sam thinking that Dean hates him as well.”
