*Note: This interview was taken pre-episode 2 of season 3 of Wynonna Earp. RIP. (Was going to put the name but what if someone hasn’t seen episode 2 yet?)
Wynonna Earp continues to be the little show that could with an amazing cast, superb writing, and a foul mouthed hero with a love for whisky and caring her friends & family.
We got a chance to talk with Melanie Scrofano, who plays Wynonna Earp at San Diego Comic Con about season 3, having Megan Follows on set, and what happens now that we’ve reached the moment that Waverly finds out the truth of Mama Earp.
“Emily’s great gift is doing what you don’t expect and then going, “OMG, it’s too early for that!” Melanie exclaimed, truly surprised and in awe of the work that she gets to be a part of. Season 3 continues to surprise in writing with the arrival of Mama Earp.
The Earp matriarch, who abandoned her children at a young age and who I honestly thought was dead, is alive and well. She’s been hiding away, against her will or not we’re not sure, in a psychiatric hospital. And if you’re a fan of Anne of Green Gables you’ll be excited that she’s planned by Canadian royalty Megan Follows.
“Megan is great. She is a constant professional and really just strives to…it’s hard to come into a genre show where you haven’t been a part of it. We’ve built a mythology. She’s just hopping in in season 3 and has barely any clue. So she worked diligently to try to understand and to really connect to what we had created.”
Scrofano continued by explaining that Megan went as far as watching her so she could get a feel for the way the Earp family carried themselves.
“She’d watch how I moved, because she was like, “I wanna show where she comes from.” So she would watch how I moved and she would move the same way. She was tireless at trying to honor the Earp sisters and honor where they came from.”
The most concerning part of all of this is that Waverly thought that her mother had abandoned them and that Wynonna had no clue where she was.
“At the end of the day, it’s always gonna be…the Earp curse, that’s our purpose, that’s our overriding objective. Having said that, in our down moments, it will cause some…and it’s interesting because Nicole, who has Waverly’s back, also may not be impressed that her girlfriend was hurt.”
With Waverly finding out, it’s going to break her heart and cause her to distance herself from her sister. But not all is lost and there won’t be unnecessary drama because the Earp sisters together through thick and thin.
“It will cause some interesting dynamics. But at the end of the day the Earp sisters work together and we have our common goal and we’ve got each others back.”
