Explaining Legends of Tomorrow to a casual fan is hard, but there’s a line in “Freaks and Geeks” that does that perfectly. As Dionysus, the Party God tells the Legends they need to win a “Chug Challenge” to win the cup needed to drink out of to become Fates, Astra says: “This is ridiculous.” To which Charlie responds by saying “and that’s what makes it fun.”
Legends of Tomorrow is the most ridiculous, silly show out there today.
And thank God for that because it’s also the most fun, as well. I mean, what other show would have the fate of everything be decided on a game of beer pong?
(It would be fun though to see Barry Allen challenge the Mirror Master to a drinking game to decide the fate of Central City, but I digress.)
So now that Legends of Tomorrow has done their homage to college films, let’s talk about “Freaks and Geeks” and how it hits upon one of the most important things kids go through when they enter college: Trying to figure out where they belong.
One of the toughest things in life is figuring out where you fit in or if you even do. “Freaks and Geeks” sees Astra finally figuring out if she belongs with the Legends or not. Eventually, Charlie is able to show Astra that the Legends are the family that she needs. It’s good that she does because I haven’t been the biggest fan of Astra this season.
“Freaks and Geeks” showed a prime example of this. When Astra and Charlie are trying to get into a sorority so they can enter a “Chug Challenge” to win the cup, Astra does nothing but bicker and moan about the plan. During the interview with the sorority leader, Astra ends up antagonizing Charlie enough that they fight, causing both to not get into the sorority.
Astra, Charlie is only trying to get you to follow the plan so they can help you!
Eventually, she figures this out but we need more moments of not being a complete jerk so we can root for Astra. Because right now, I care 10000% more about getting Behrad back than Astra’s mom. There’s still time but just be less of a pain in the butt, Astra.
PARTY TIME
As for the rest of “Freaks and Geeks” , it involves “The Party God” Dionysus drugging Nate and the female Legends forming their own sorority to defeat him and get the chalice.
GO DELTA CHI SIGMA!!!
I love a good college romp as much as the next person and Legends of Tomorrow did not disappoint. Between the recruitment montage and the goofy mascot outfits, Legends paid homage to those classic 80’s college comedies.
But that best part of “Freaks and Geeks” once again belonged to one Captain Sara Lance, who proves that you don’t need eyesight to dominate gods at beer pong.
After Sara’s victory, the Legends are able to get the chalice and the magical liquid to make them Fates. All of the Legends, including Astra, drink from the chalice to become Fates for 24 hours, except Zari. This was interesting to me but also a lovely character moment for Zari, as it shows how much she believes in this family she has joined up with. In her heart, she truly trusts them to save Behrad without a moment’s hesitation. No matter what version of Zari, she will always believe in her friends.
So what’s next for the Legends? Smooth sailing and bringing back everyone from the dead? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
If the end of “Freaks and Geeks” is any indication, Charlie’s evil fate sister confronts Astra with blackmail on her mind – then the answer will be no. It might be ridiculous. It might be silly. But it definitely will be fun.
LEGENDARY THOUGHTS
- Mick and Lita’s bonding storyline continues with a father-daughter visit to college. Mainly, Mick tries to get Lita in there by having Nate pretend to be her dad. It’s a little sad that this storyline got short-changed because of the A plot. Week by Week, I like seeing Mick Rory as a frustrated but lovable father.
- Nate crushing on Dionysus throughout the episode was adorable.
- I saw those looks Zari and John gave one another. You can feel the heat ever slowly rising on this slow burn.
- SHOTGUN NATE
- Dionysus showing off where he kept all his secret magical booze. Feels like he broke some sort of bro code there.
- I watch every week and I still forget the names of the other Fate sisters. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Legends of Tomorrow airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
