Matt Reeves’ upcoming film, The Batman, is getting TV series spin-off on HBO Max, and as much as we love Batman, we’re starting to wonder if it’s not just time for a break.
There IS such a thing as too much of a good thing.
News of the spin-off was first reported by TV Line.
The show will “build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”
The Batman is set to hit theaters in October 2021, though who knows if that date will actually hold, because who knows anything these days. It stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, along with Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as The Penguin, among others.
We already had a series set in Gotham, the FOX show ending just last season. And the CW’s Batwoman is also set there, though DC already set up enough universes during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover that we don’t have to worry about their storylines affecting each other.
I guess this isn’t really the worst thing ever, but I don’t think it’s the greatest one, either. There are many, many Batman related characters I’d love to see brought to life, but some of the bigger ones make no sense unless you’re bringing Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne into the small screen, and as for the rest ….well, we might as well tell new stories, right?
