It’s officially Autumn! Time to break out the flannel, boots, and fall-scented candles! Unless you’re like me and you’ve had your fall things out since the beginning of September. I live in Texas and fall isn’t even a season, it’s just a state of mind. The best way to truly start feeling like it’s fall is with movies. Some movies just have fall vibes. This list is for people that don’t watch scary or Halloween movies, although one of the best fall movies is the OG Halloween. For the purposes of this list I won’t be adding any horror movies, movies that happen on Halloween or have to do with a Halloween party, or anything vaguely supernatural.
Without further ado here are 10 movies that radiate fall vibes:
All that Heaven Allows (1955)
Rock Hudson wearing flannel and tons of fall foliage. This is the most autumn a movie could be. Melodramas aren’t for everyone, but this one is worth watching. Hudson and Jane Wyman falling in love despite the feelings of her children and the class she runs in. After watching this you should just keep going through all of Hudson’s melodrama filmography: Written on the Wind, Magnificent Obsession, and The Tarnished Angels, all directed by Douglas Sirk. All that Heaven Allows is currently available to stream on TCM until October 8.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
I must admit When Harry Met Sally isn’t one of my favorite movies, but the fall vibes are undeniable. Tell me you don’t want to visit New York in the fall after watching this. Even the movie poster is a scene with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal surrounded by fall foliage. You may come to the movie for the romance, but after watching it you just want all of Ryan’s outfits. When Harry Met Sally is currently available to stream through CBS All Access App and the Amazon channel.
Remember the Titans (2000)
Fall means football season, especially in the South. This sports classic is the perfect movie to watch as a mood booster, even more so if your team isn’t playing like you hope. Remember the Titans tells the story of a segregated school coming together to create a championship football team. You can stream this movie on Disney +.
You’ve Got Mail (1998)
You’ve Got Mail, like When Harry Met Sally showcases New York in the fall. The movie goes through a few seasons, but Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) hits the nail on the head, “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” I have a couple of questions about this movie (why did Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) forgive him so easily), but who doesn’t love this The Shop Around the Corner retelling? You’ve Got Mail isn’t currently available to stream, but you can rent the movie on Amazon.
Knives Out (2019)
The clothing alone qualifies this movie as a fall staple. Knives Out. This murder mysery with an all-star cast is a must watch. Amazon Prime has Knives Out available to stream.
Mystic Pizza (1998)
Set in Connecticut, Mystic Pizza tells the story of three friends working in a pizza parlor. Leaves are falling and the characters are falling in love, what more do you need from an autumn movie. You can watch Mystic Pizza on Starz.
Dead Poets Society (1989)
Fall means that school is back in session. This prep school classic never falls to make me cry. I don’t miss being in school, but Dead Poets Society does make me miss the anticipation for a new school year. Vudu has Dead Poets Society available to stream for free.
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
I don’t know how to explain it, but this movie just radiates autumn vibes. Maybe it’s just because the perfect watching conditions for this movie involve cold weather, rain, a blanket and a candle that smells like pumpkins. It’s a cozy movie elevated by cozy weather. If you haven’t seen it, then what are you doing? It’s currently available to watch on Netflix!
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before just screams fall, back to school has never looked better than in this movie. Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centino) navigate their fake relationship and real feelings in this movie available on Netflix.
Fall Harvest on Hallmark Channel
Hallmark Channel may be known for their Christmas movies, but they are releasing lovely romantic movies year-round. If you want your fill of autumn activities that I’m not sure anyone actually does, but seem like fall staples. (Like I said fall is a state of mind) The first Fall Harvest movie premiered on Saturday, but don’t worry there’s plenty of chances to catch it again: along with the other four fall premieres. For a full schedule of premieres and replays of old Fall Harvest favorites you should download the Hallmark Movie Checklist! Using the app you can track Hallmark movies on all three stations for all the seasons!
