Locke & Key‘s season two premiere made one thing very clear…OUR BABIES ARE IN DANGER! After a summer of thinking that Dogde is gone, they’ve been living their best lives. Nina Locke is starting to move past her husbands death with her children by her side. Tyler Locke is happy with his girlfriend and planning a future. Kinsey Locke is high on life and love with Gabe aka Dodge. And Bode…well, he might be the only one who knows something is not A-OK but we’ll get to that.
Point being, everything’s looking up for the Locke family. They don’t know that Dodge is right under their nose, manipulating every single one of them and starting to bring forth cracks in their post summer and season one life. That comes in the form of legit hiding a body in front of Nina and pretending like it’s nothing, keeping mum on the disappearance of Ellie, and integrating themselves so thoroughly in the family that when the betrayal is revealed, it’s going to tear them apart.
In a way, Dodge is more diabolical than ever in Locke & Key season two. Not only is she romancising Kinsey, she’s bidding her time and creating her own keys as a means of getting the Locke’s to hand over the keys they have and bring forth destruction, chaos, or whatever the hell she’s up to. And honestly, we’re here for it because we’re messy and we like drama. But we also want to see the cracks start to appear when it comes to Dodge and for her to feel something more for Kinsey.
Which, reading that and actually typing it out does feel a little weird, but we have to understand that Dodge isn’t human. She’s never been. She’s not even a she. She’s a being. An echo. Something that shouldn’t exist. And she is fine with taking on any gender or identity needed because it’s a non issue for her. So…maybe she could develop actual feelings for Kinsey that aren’t just part of the plan. It would be more complex and a hot mess if she did than her just going on with her life causing destruction with no pause.
There are issues for sure of consent that Locke & Key has to keep an eye out on. Because right now, Kinsey isn’t consenting to kissing Echo. It’s a lie. A trap. And hopefully the show doesn’t take it further than that because that would be something unwatchable and that would make the situation something that we can’t go back from. Seriously, crossing my fingers, arms, and toes that Netflix doesn’t cross that line when it comes to Kinsey, Gabe, and Dodge.
We do want to talk about Duncan Locke. Did we somehow miss in season one that he’s in a loving relationship with another man? Because we’re trying to recall and nothings popping up. Either way, it was nice to see Duncan’s partner enter the Locke family dynamic and we really wish that he wasn’t going go go away on business. But we guess they needed a convenient reason to get Duncan back into the house because the kids are going to need someone to experiment on when it comes to his memories.
And that right there is the biggest danger our babies face on Locke & Key. The older they get, the less they remember. And that’s worrying because they’ve gone through so many crazy adventures together and losing those memories is like losing a part of themselves and the steps that they’ve taken to get to this place.
Locke & Key season two is available on Netflix.
Duncan’s fiance, Brian, was mentioned a few times in season 1 (usually in the context of Duncan inviting Nina to Boston to have dinner with them or him and Brian taking the kids for the night to give Nina a break). We never saw him until this episode though.
