New Amsterdam decided to gift us with even more of this medical drama with a special episode, titled “Truth Be Told,” airing on Monday (May 9). This leads into Tuesday’s regular timeslot where we’ll see the aftermath of Max trying to one-up Fuentes and kind of failing. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. We’re here to talk about the various truths that these characters had to face, some our favorites and others not so much.

Helen’s Truth
Because Helen is my favorite character of New Amsterdam, #SorryNotSorry Max, I wanted to start off with her. Yes, half her journey was based on a dream that her mom had. And yes, it was more of her mom’s journey. But I don’t like the mom and she’s not going to get time from me. It’s all about the Helen life for me. And frankly, I’m sick and tired of how her mom treats her and it hits way too close to home even if a dream and she grows from it.
Helen has spent so long trying to make her mom happy. She’s pulled all the stops and did everything she could to prove she’s a smart and capable woman. And none of it has been enough. “Truth Be Told” saw Helen being herself despite the crap her mother gives her and kind of understanding that her mother loves her in her own way. It might not be perfect, it might be hard, and I might not totally understand it. But it’s not for me to understand. It’s for Helen to understand. And love, after all, is the most complicated thing and that’s true for these two.
Max’s Truth
Then there’s the Max of it all in “Truth Be Told.” He really went to a school and tried to solve what was going on. And the entire time I’m thinking, “Oh Max, trying to save the entire city while having a thriving relationship and a lovely daughter. How do you do it all?” He tries his hardest. That’s how he does it. And when he can’t figure it out, he puts a bandaid on it because that’s what those are for when you have no other options and you’re just trying to hold on.
This, combined with Fuentes getting the upper hand, is setting Max on a path of exposing the truth and understanding that even when it’s out there…some people don’t care. It’s about money and if he’s not careful, he’ll end up stuck in NYC after telling Helen that they’ll go home after this “problem” with New Amsterdam is fixed. The matter of the fact is that he keeps putting bandaids on things and it’s all going to collapse around him eventually. Good thing he has Helen there to help him pick himself back up when that happens.
There needs to be another solution, but neither Max or I can see it right now. But trust in Max that he will find it.
Iggy’s Truth
Iggy was by far the most frustrating part of “Truth Be Told.” He cheated on his husband, plain and simple. Yes, it was emotional cheating and that still counts whether Iggy wants to admit it or not. And he took it all a step further by firing Trevor and then giving him the perfect reason to hit back at New Amsterdam for the firing. (Not a lawyer here but it sounds entirely too sketchy the way that Trevor was fired and it’s going to bite Iggy in the ass.)
This isn’t me saying that Trevor is without fault. He knew that Iggy was married and he leaned into it. But Trevor wasn’t married and Iggy made a choice to flirt back. He even made it a point during the firing to say that he was basically going to tell that to HR. Ultimately, Trevor isn’t responsible for Iggy and his cheating. Iggy is. And this firing isn’t going to get rid of the problem. It’s just going to delay it until Iggy realizes that the only one responsible for the clusterfuck caused…was him.
Other Random Thoughts from “Truth Be Told”:
- It’s been ages since I’ve seen Frankie Muniz in something and he did a pretty good job.
- Bloom definitely needed some perspective because sometimes she is a bit of bully. There. I said it.
- Also, seeing her and Casey rebuild their friendship is amazing!
- Now to start on the serious groundwork for her and Leyla. Because that is hurting Bloom, big time.
- Reynolds actually shined this episode in a way he hasn’t for a while and I appreciated how he gave Muniz’ character the perspective he needed.
- Fuentes, even though you’re the “villain” of this story, your jawline is impeccable.
New Amsterdam airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
