Have you watched Purple Hearts yet? I know, I know… you probably have. Though the movie isn’t perfect, it is one of our favorite movies of the year thus far. Why? Well one of the reasons is the music.
The music is such a big part of the story. It is so meticulously placed that it really did heighten the scenes that it was in, but also allowed part of the story to unfold.
And part of what makes the music so special is that Purple Hearts star Sofia Carson wrote some of the original music with Justin Tranter.
Sofia was talking to Billboard about the music and said, “I had, of course, been writing songs since I was eleven years old, but for myself, from my point of view… songs that came from my heart, not someone else’s. I was so tremendously lucky that I had Justin to be my co-writer in this process.”
Sofia also talked about her writing process with the outlet.
“Liz [Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum] asked me how I write songs and when inspiration hits. I would tell her that sometimes [I] might be driving and I have to pull over to the side of the road and start writing something down, based on something that just happened to me,” she said.
We’re kind of wondering if Sofia keeps a notebook by her bed to write notes in the middle of the night or left her phone by her bed to record memos for herself.
But the music was coming from Cassies point of view. Sofia remarked, ““I was most definitely writing from Cassie’s point of view. We wanted to kind of capture that essence for Cassie, that inspiration would hit based on the things that were happening to her in her life.”
We think that she definitely got it right and we absolutely love the song, I Hate The Way (which we’re obsessing over). The song felt like words we couldn’t say when we are falling for someone.
Sofia talked about writing the song.
“I had partially already written the song in my notes,” Sofia said. “It was, of course, very much inspired by the simple fact that Cassie just hated the way she was loving [Luke]. She hated the fact that she was falling for this man. It was a combination of rage, frustration, and deep passion. And once we brought that song to life, it was like we found Cassie’s voice that was different from mine — which was important to us. And it kind of guided us for the rest of the soundtrack.”
We’re so thankful for the music from Purple Hearts. The movie is streaming on Netflix now.
