We watch a lot of TV and movies! And we listen to a lot of music, podcasts, audiobooks…so yeah, we’re fangirling over a lot of things! So, each week we come together to highlight all the feels they give us throughout the week. On these Fangirlish Feels of the Week, there are five categories and many thoughts! Ready?
Here we go!
What You’re Fangirling Over This Week
Rachel: On The Gilded Age this week, there was a moment fans have been hoping and waiting for. Larry, son of the new-money Russells, and Marian, niece of the old-money Brooks, have been friends since the show’s early days but now the slow burn has become obvious.
Another character proposed to Marian, but he did it in public so she couldn’t say no. And Larry’s reaction was all we needed to see. We know somehow things are going to work out so these two eventually unite the opposite sides of 61st Street. I’m invested every step of the way.
Shana: I don’t often say much about Shining Vale in these because the Friday timing lines up a certain kind of way with when we draft our feels. But I’m legitimately still floored by the utter insanity of that finale. The part with Nellie and her girls in particular…wow.
Ashley W.: One of the best (and, financially, worst) parts about comic books are the variant covers, and I am OBSESSED with Ethan Young’s variant cover for Marvel’s Voices: Avengers (2023) #1. It features two of my favorite Marvel characters in Robbie Reyes’s Ghost Rider and Steve Rogers’s Captain America.
It’s a comic book cover that I never knew I needed but am so glad exists. I love it so much that I need to go buy myself extra copies. Also, the issue is just an overall great read that pays homage to various Avengers, their histories, and the group’s evolution over 60 years.
Erin: Taylor Swift’s TIME interview. I love her so much and I think that interview was amazing. She’s so blunt, carefree, and honest. I know that for some, they wonder why she’s the person of the year, but to them I ask if they’re threatened by a woman being that powerful. Taylor has changed the landscape and helped to revive the economy. She’s empowering. She’s changed so many peoples lives. She’s a force and I think that’s really f**king special.
WTF Moment of the Week
Amanda: When Adele’s The Hollywood Reporter interview came out and in it, she jokingly said other people shouldn’t sing her songs but then went on to say because “they’re never going to be able to emote it” I was taken aback.
I get what she means when she said no one else can sing her songs like she does, period, because that’s true in the sense there’s only one Adele so only she can sing them exactly as she does. But to say other people can’t emote them is wild.
To me, that takes away the empathy and relatability people find in art and music and stories. Just because someone didn’t create the work and doesn’t know the entire meaning, intent, inspiration, and backstory to something doesn’t mean they can’t evoke and emote the same as the creator.
Oh, and this is how I discovered “Make You Feel My Love” is not originally be Adele but a Bob Dylan song Adele covered that became really successful. So that made me go WTF even more.
Rachel: For me, this one is a tie this week. I went WTF when Marian’s future fiance on The Gilded Age showed his true colors. He invited her to a garden party but she couldn’t come because she volunteers teaching poor people how to read and write.
He persisted, insisting that she could come. “It’s not as if you are a real teacher.” Ummm…EXCUSE ME??!!??! A red flag like that means that relationship isn’t going to last. (Then she can be with Larry.)
I also went WTF when Gracie (Julianne Moore) in May December insulted her own daughter’s weight, but in a passive-aggressive way. “I want to commend you for being brave enough to show your arms.” Just proof that character is one messed-up piece of work.
Lizzie: I thought May December, in its entirety, fit in this category. I understand why it’s getting Oscar buzz — the performances are noteworthy. But the movie also made me feel icky. Are we, as a society, just okay with predators? With celebrating them? Apparently we are!
What We’re Listening to This Week
Amanda: As soon as the clock strikes 12 AM on Friday, Tate McRae’s new album, Think Later, is on repeat! I feel so proud when I remember the tween I watched dance and see how far she’s come!
Rachel: I get to listen to an episode of the “Stuff You Missed in History Class” podcast every once in a while and this week, I listened to the episode about lesser-known suffragette Lucy Stone. Interesting and informative.
Ashley W.: I’ve never been a Christmas music person — as in someone who actively chooses to put on and listen to Christmas music. But Sabrina Carpenter’s fruitcake album is an exception. I’ve been a fan of hers for nearly a decade, and it’s great to see the growth she’s making as a singer.
Shana: It’s December. As a Jew, I don’t do Xmas. But as a longtime lover of AFI, I do do the obligatory DecemberUnderground jam session.
Ashley T.: One of my favorite artists, Jess Ray, has a really solid Christmas EP called Gloria Gloria that she did with her husband Kyle Langdon. It’s short and truly beautiful. Check it out if you need some beautifully crafted fresh Christmas tunes for your playlist.
Erin: I hate Podcasts but I do LOVE Call Her Daddy. I loved the interview that Alexandra Cooper did with Paris Hilton this week. Cooper has a way of getting answers that we have all wondered about. Cooper has a way of making the people she speaks with feel comfortable. I admire her.
What We Rewatched This Week
Raquel: I’m catching up on Cobra Kai and I’m already halfway through season 5! Consider me hooked and suddenly, I want to learn Karate (wink, wink)
Amanda: I rewatched One Royal Holiday, because ‘tis the season, and I love Aaron Tveit.
Ashley W.: It was Gabriel Luna’s birthday week. So, naturally, I started rewatching his episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to honor the actor (and even more wonderful person) and to reexperience the awesomeness of Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider.
Ashley T.: I got in an 8th viewing of The Marvels this week and man, I’m just blown away by Teyonah Parris’ performance all over again. That shot of her getting charged up at the end is frickin’ amazing. I love it.
Badass Character of the Week
Amanda: Shoutout to queen Xochitl Gomez for becoming the second ever Latina to win Dancing with the Stars! (And shoutout to Laurie Hernandez for being the first!)
Rachel: Ben Song on Quantum Leap saved an entire town from witchcraft hysteria and decided to move forward working with his ex. (Well, ex for now.) I’d say that’s pretty badass.
Shana: This week in “Danielle Poole is my hero,” she and Ed destroyed me. But it was so, so good to see her finally let that anger out. If you’re not watching For All Mankind, you are so very, very much missing out.
Ashley T.: Anyone working retail this time of year, I salute you. May the odds be ever in your favor.
