After a whirlwind eight-episode debut season, The Buccaneers will return for more. Apple TV+ renewed the freshman drama inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s final and unfinished novel for a second season. The acclaimed series scores this renewal on the heels of The Buccaneers 1×08, “Wedding of the Season,” which streamed on Wednesday, December 13.
The show’s season finale throws more than a few twists at the group of friends, including Nan’s biological mother attending her wedding to Theo, the Duke of Tintagel, and Nan helping her sister Jinny run away from her abusive husband. The latter is a stunning display of sisterhood between the St. George siblings, Conchita, Mabel, and Lizzy — set to Taylor Swift’s “Long Live (Taylor’s Version).”
The Buccaneers Season 1, streaming in its entirety on Apple TV+ now, starred Kristine Frøseth as Nan St. George, Alisha Boe as Conchita Closson, Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth, Aubri Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth, and Imogen Waterhouse as Jinny St. George, aka the buccaneers.
Emmy Award winner Christina Hendricks starred as Patricia St. George and Mia Threapleton as Honoria Marable. The cast includes Josh Dylan as Lord Richard Marable, Guy Remmers as Theo, Duke of Tintagel, Matthew Broome as Guy Thwarte, and Barney Fishwick as Lord James Seadown.
Created and written by Katherine Jakeways, The Buccaneers debuted with a three-episode premiere on Wednesday, November 8. The series follows “a group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition,” per its synopsis.
Read Jakeways’s statement about the renewal below:
“It’s been a complete thrill to watch people all over the world fall in love with these characters, who’ve been brought to such vibrant life by our spectacular cast. We know season one left audiences desperate to know what’s next for our buccaneers, so I’m absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to explore the further adventures of this smart, joyful, messy sisterhood.”
The Buccaneers is a music-driven series that blends 1870s English aristocracy with a modern, female-centric soundtrack produced by Stella Mozgawa, including songs from Taylor Swift (“Nothing New (feat. Phoebe Bridgers) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” is featured in the series premiere), Maggie Rogers, Bikini Kill, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Angel Olsen, Brandi Carlile, and more.
The Buccaneers’s debut season also features original music from Folick, Lucius, Alison Mosshart, Warpaint, Gracie Abrams, Sharon Van Etten, Bully, Danielle Ponder, and more from series composers AVAWAVES.
“The irreverence and wit of The Buccaneers charmed global audiences, and we’re excited to be working with Katherine Jakeways and The Forge again on the next adventure for Nan and her friends,” said Jay Hunt, creative director, Europe, Apple TV+.
BAFTA Award winner Susanna White is among the first season’s directors. BAFTA Award nominee Beth Willis and Jakeways executive produce the show. The Forge Entertainment produces The Buccaneers for Apple TV+.
