We’re back for another week! The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow” is a very irregular episode in which Chenford and Tim’s storyline are the strong points while the other plots feel disconnected and uninteresting. Ready?
Here we go!
Chenford Anguish in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow”
Chenford made us suffer big time in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow.” It all started too good to be true. Tim was incredibly sweet when commemorating Lucy’s short radio, which saved her life. But quickly everything changed and, from there, Tim had Lucy in the dark, not knowing where he was, what he was doing, or if he was alive.
Lucy lost everyone she cared about in some way or another throughout her life. Her parents are so demanding and make her feel so bad that Lucy gets used to the fact that they are not there for her and they will never do it. She lost them a long time ago.
And the people who cared about her along the way ended up leaving or dying – like Jackson. That, coupled with the way Tim left her house, the subsequent silence, and the fact that Lucy’s nerves are on edge since what happened with the exam, it’s completely normal that she would think the worst when Tim didn’t show signs of life in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow.”
That claim that Lucy makes at the end of The Rookie 6×05, “The Vow,” is both a scream of anger and fear. Lucy isn’t asking for too much. The least Tim can do is let her know that he’s alive. Tim may not be able or willing to tell Lucy everything that is happening, but at least letting her know that he is okay, as Lucy rightly says, is not optional.
So she’s perfectly right to ask him to get away because she sees that Tim doesn’t understand the magnitude of the fear he made her feel and he’s also not willing to share whatever he’s going through with her. And that’s too much for Lucy.
“I need you to leave”
Lucy trusts Tim completely. In the last episode she showed him how deep that trust is for her and, in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow” Tim is doing the opposite, he is hiding from her. Tim doesn’t trust her.
Yeah, he has his reasons for not doing it but, at the end of the day, they are life partners, Tim’s things are hers and vice versa and the love of Lucy’s life is not trusting her in something that clearly is important enough to shake up his entire life. It’s a fact, regardless of the reason for it.
Therefore, at that moment, Lucy cannot be in Tim’s presence because she has too many mixed feelings. The fear Lucy feels is mixed with relief at seeing him safe, her anger because he kept her in the dark, and her disappointment because he doesn’t trust her enough to let her in.
And Tim wants nothing more than to hug Lucy, get lost in her arms, and forget everything… he needs her. But Tim understands what Lucy feels and the boundaries she set, so, against all his instincts, he leaves.
This leads us to analyze Tim’s decision to keep Lucy in the dark in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow.” Tim is not someone who lets anyone in completely, on the contrary, he ends up pushing them away. From the little we know of his past, his life wasn’t easy and he learned to build walls around himself high enough so that if one wall is torn down, there is always another one.
This means that there is a part of Tim that Lucy – and surely no one – knows. So yes, Tim tries to protect Lucy so that her career doesn’t suffer, but a big part of him tries to distance her from that part of himself that Lucy doesn’t know yet, preventing her from doing it and, perhaps, protecting her from it, just like Tim protects himself from her.
From here, they both need to talk and have a mature conversation in which Tim understands that if he doesn’t want to lose Lucy, he must let her in completely and he must not be afraid of the consequences of that because Lucy loves him just the way he is and they’re stronger together. Together, they can grow, support each other, and overcome it all.
Impossible Choices…
That being said, we also want to talk about Tim’s position on his swearing-in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow.” That guy is a jerk but Tim can’t just kill him or let his ex-partner do it. It would be cold-blooded murder.
Not only would Tim lose his career and his life, but he could also lose his freedom, not to mention what Tim might feel after killing someone in cold blood (he’s a good person, not a killer). And if that guy was really his friend, he wouldn’t try to make Tim feel bad just for having a brain and wanting to save his life.
On the other hand, the lie in the report could indeed cost Tim his career or, at least, have some negative consequence such as a demotion, but what Tim’s colleague doesn’t seem to understand is that there are only two options: either they leave free that pig or confess and face the consequences. Killing that pig is not an option.
And we’re glad Tim kept a cool head to know that the only option for him is to make that pig pay for what he did legally. Therefore, we hope that he will go one step further and allow himself to be helped by all those who love him. It’s the only way he can get out of this without losing his entire life and without feeling like he betrayed his comrade who died in combat.
Other Stuff in The Rookie 6×05 “The Vow”
- Anna is super cute!
- However, it all ended on a tone that was too bittersweet for Bailan… and this is sure to change their dynamic in a way that we’re still not convinced we like.
- Tim can be so sweet. The detail about the radio was awesome.
- “I’m being a good girlfriend and trusting MY MAN.” DEAD.
- Unpopular opinion: We don’t think much of Tamara interrupting the Chenford romantic moment. We would have loved for that moment to continue, but we had so many before and we still have so many more to see, Tamara interrupting one of them doesn’t mean much to us in the grand scheme of things.
- Tamara always makes Lucy smile in the worst of times and that’s all that matters to us.
- Tim looking at Lucy’s contact on the phone…We’re sobbing!
- Nolan should have helped Lucy. He’s not even good at that.
- The case of the week was confusing and uninteresting.
- I loved seeing Aaron and Lucy together, more moments like this, please, and thank you!
- Everything about Aaron and his therapist was as inappropriate and strange as it felt. We were glad she backed down on this. The only thing that intrigues us is what she was doing recording Aaron’s session. Who is this woman?
