Love is strange. It comes in so many forms and has so many facets to it. It makes you feel alive and sometimes it scares you. But any type of love is to be celebrated.
The Way Home takes us on so many journeys and as we go down the road of this journey coming to an end – I am scared. I am scared of where things end up, where relationships end, and if the Landry’s are going to be okay.
But most of all, I wonder what the pond has left in store.

FERN
Cliff has said that he’s leaving and Fern is in charge of making sure he leaves. She’s trying to convince Tessa that she doesn’t care about Cliff, but it is obvious that she does. He makes her feel like she can be herself. With that being said it also causes Fern a lot of conflict.
Tessa and Fern have a history – they consider each other family. I actually feel for Fern. She’s trying to balance all of the lies and misdirections. Having to explain Elliott to Cliff and then make sure he’s okay must be overwhelming.
I love Fern and I think that she’s the heart of the family. I just feel like there is so much more to learn about her and I know we don’t have too much time left to do that.

THE HERALD
Closing down the newspaper, The Herald, has to be hard. It’s been a part of Port Haven and a vital part of that. But it makes sense for it to close.
And also it doesn’t.
I think that there is a good reason to keep The Herald open. It is Port Haven’s history. And I don’t see time travel stopping. So how will there be a record? Yes, I get the internet and I get the record it keeps. However, it just feels like it’s taking a piece of history and making it less relevant. I don’t know.
Then again – this is Port Haven and there is a lot more to history there.
Take The Point for example. That place is a central point in the town. Everyone is reassuring Kat that she did the right thing by closing The Herald. You may remember the footage that Alice had thrown away – it’s there. It was bought at Evelyn’s estate sale. Only the footage of Kat and Alice in it was edited out.
Did Alice know that they were time travelers? It seems that she did. For Alice, this means that she needs to go see Evelyn and figure out what she knows.
Alice always shows up for Evelyn when she needs her the most. The two have a strong bond and it’s actually really sweet to watch. Alice wants to protect her and let her know that she is not alone. I love their friendship. I love their relationship. The joy that they find in each other is endearing.

TESSA
Tessa leaving and getting stuck in the past – well, that is something I still don’t understand. What I do like is that in 1925, Tessa is doing everything that she can to avoid her son but then after some time opening up to him was a nice moment to see.
I don’t particularly like Tessa. I think that she’s made selfish choices and that makes her dangerous.
We learn that she and Griffin were split up when she got sick and he jumped back into the pond to go get her medication, but he never returned. Tessa didn’t know where to go, but she went to the Landry farm and they took her in.
Tessa remains a mystery, but when she tells Elliott that she never wrote a letter and returned her ring. Why is it that they got it then? I have a feeling this had to do with Griffin. I think that Tessa has her walls up, because she knows that eventually Elliott will leave and she’s afraid to let him in.
When she catched Elliott singing Time After Time, she tells him that was the song she used to sing to him. I guess that somethings stay with us forever. No time or distance can change that.

ELLIOTT
Elliott deciding to stay behind was idealistic. Now that being said, I can understand that he wants a relationship with his Mom and that he felt that this was the only way that it would happen. He wanted more time and a connection with Tessa. There was a chance that he wouldn’t be able to get back to his life.
And so sacrifices have had to been made and I do get that.
But Elliott wants to look at things differently and see his Mom through rose colored glasses. He doesn’t want to hear anything else.
And that may cost him everything.
When Elliott reveals to Fern and Tessa that he decided to stay – they both tell him that he made a mistake. I don’t think that he was looking at the whole picture but that is okay. We all do that. It’s just when we are faced with the knowledge that what we did wasn’t the smartest thing that it is natural to be a little defensive.
Elliott wants to help his Mom and goes to work at the stills helping her for her order with Capone.
The only person who Elliott listens to is himself. He wants to believe that he’s doing the right thing.
It’s when Elliott decides to jump to go back with Kat that I grew to respect him a little. Yes, he managed to invite his Mom to New Years, and later realized that was a mistake as something was going to happen.
Secret messages and all.

ALICE
Her jumping to see Evelyn was equal parts heartbreaking and frustrating. In the present, Alice knowing that Evelyn edited the video and knowing she’s a time traveler – I feel for Evelyn. It feels like everyone lies to her.
I feel like Evelyn needs to figure her path. But so do so many.
What really was intriguing to me was that when Kat overhears Tessa and Fern talking in the speak easy, she confronts Tessa. What was interesting to me is that Tessa seemed surprised and a little confused when he found out that Kat’s daughters name was Alice. Why does that matter?
Is it that Tessa remembers being younger and meeting Alice? I don’t even know. Alice isn’t in 1925, she’s in the 70’s. She’s making sure that Evelyn is okay. She’s trying to figure everything out, but figuring it out and being there for others, but I wonder if Alice holds a bigger part in all of this than we expect. Or at least I do.
Alice returning to the present an telling Del she saw her, was sweet. She gets to see a different side of her Grandma and I think that is special. Del telling Alice that she’s okay with everything that happened because it led to Alice.

THE CAPONE SHIPMENT
It’s the morning of the shipment to Capone, Tessa comes to check on Elliott. I do think that Elliott wants to protect his Mom, but also I believe she wants to protect him. Tessa tries to act tough, but the reality is I don’t think that she’s so cold that she has not enjoyed all of her time with Elliott. When he opens up to get to know her and they find ways to relate to each other – I was moved.
It was crazy to me that Grayson of all people would be the one that makes it known that Cliff is lying. Now, he didn’t know he did it, but he did help them all out and I appreciate that cause most of the time I hate him.
But I was also moved when Fern and Kat went to save everyone because Cliff was going to arrest people at the shipment. Little did they know that one of the people working with them was an undercover cop.
With the entire shipment interrupted, I thought Cliff would arrest them all. But he lets them go. He couldn’t bear to have Fern hurt and the thought of something happening to her was too much for him.
Seeing him go against what he thought he should do and had to do, because he loves her, was sweet. He was torn, and that was hard to see, but I also knew that he had made his feelings obvious.

JACOB IS IN LOVE’
Jacob has long confused me, because he seems so guarded and so scared, but also he wants so desperately to be loved. So, as much as I dislike the Goodwins I am thrilled that he has found Abby and that he had the courage to admit that he loves her.
Jacob is a mysterious man, but he is also just lost. Abby grounds him and gives him faith in the world around him. She makes him want to stay.
It’s the dinner that Abby comes to at the Landry farm that is interesting. She’s saying all the wrong things, but it is because she is nervous. Making a good impression is important to her, because she loves Jacob. I couldn’t stop laughing over that dinner.
Jacob met Abby at The Point and they talked about everything that they were feeling. Abby wanted to go back to Toronto, and they had to talk it through. These two were meant for something more.
I want to see them make it through. I want to see them happy. Hell, I want to see all of them happy.
