Coven Academy, the new Freeform supernatural series, is giving The CW in the best possible way.
The teen supernatural drama stars Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar, a young woman who discovers she’s a witch and ends up at an elite magic boarding school. She’s joined by Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, a deeply empathic student who can read minds, and Ora Duplass as Tegan, an irreverent time-bending witch. And it’s going to see these three witches dealing with ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests in New Orleans.

When I compare this show to The CW, I mean that that network liked giving us supernatural shows with attractive casts, world-ending twists, a bunch of melodrama, and heaps of romance. And yes, sometimes it wasn’t the best quality and it was cheesy. But they always knew what they were. And that unapologetic nature I saw in shows like The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies is why I watched and why so many others did too. Plus they were fun.
So when I say that Coven Academy is giving The CW vibes, it’s a compliment. And I will be watching when it lands on Freeform this October.
The Synopsis
In the haunted heart of New Orleans, “Coven Academy” follows three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability. Caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests, the coven must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect their city—and themselves.

The Cast
Coven Academy stars Malina Pauli Weissman from A Series of Unfortunate Events as Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she’s a witch; Malachi Barton from Camp Rock 3 as Jake, a magnetic warlock with a dangerous edge; Jordan Leftwich from The Family Switch as Sasha, a deeply empathic student who can read minds; Ora Duplass from Their Town as Tegan, an irreverent time-bending witch; Louis Thresher from Boarders as Ollie, a hungry, newly turned vampire; and Tiffani Thiessen from White Collar as Miss Graves, the formidable and glamorous head of the school.
The series also features special guest star Devon Sawa from Chucky and Final Destination as Mr. Cole, a brilliant and charismatic warlock professor. And the recurring cast includes Swayam Bhatia as McKenna, Brendon Tremblay as Alexander, Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora, BJ Harrison as Agnes and Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Teese.

Coven Academy premieres October 1st on Freeform at 8p.m. ET. The full season will be available the next day on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on Demand.
