Zack Snyder has been sitting on The Last Photograph for a very long time! We’re talking more than two decades here. So, yeah, the fact that we’re finally getting a first look at the movie feels like a pretty big deal and we’re excited! If you want to know all the details, keep reading!
Our favorite superhero director took to social media to share the first teaser for the movie, giving us a brief glimpse at what he’s been working on away from the superhero and sci-fi movies. And if you’re hoping to see the full thing soon, there’s good news! Snyder has promised that the full trailer is on the way.
The teaser is short and doesn’t give away much about the story, but it does tell us something important about The Last Photograph: Snyder is stepping into drama and thriller territory.
And honestly? We’re curious to see what he does with that.
What Is The Last Photograph About?
The movie stars Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, both of whom we recognize from Rebel Moon. Martin takes on the role of Ethan Black, a former DEA operative whose life changes when his diplomat brother and sister-in-law are brutally murdered while in the mountains of South America.
But the tragedy doesn’t end there.
Ethan’s niece and nephew disappear following their parents’ deaths, sending him on a dangerous mission to find them. He’s joined by a troubled war photographer who witnessed the murders and is the only person who has seen the killers’ faces.
As the two men travel deeper into the unknown, they’re forced to deal with their own pasts while the search for the missing children takes increasingly surreal turns. Grief, trauma and guilt appear to be at the center of the story, which could give Snyder plenty of room to explore something very different from the movies he’s made in recent years.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Last Photograph:
“An ex-DEA operative must return to the mountains of South America in an effort to find his missing niece and nephew, following the brutal murders of their diplomat parents. Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past. Their journey into the unknown takes them further and further away from civilisation, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”
Zack Snyder’s Favorite Collaborators Are Back
Snyder isn’t making The Last Photograph completely alone, either. Several familiar names are returning to work with him behind the scenes.
Kurt Johnstad, who previously collaborated with Snyder on 300 and the Rebel Moonmovies, wrote the screenplay. The script is based on an original story by Snyder, giving the filmmaker an even more direct connection to the project. Hans Zimmer is also among the composers working on the movie’s score, which is certainly an exciting addition to the team.
And then there’s Snyder himself behind the camera. He also served as cinematographer on The Last Photograph, making this project feel particularly personal from every angle.
For now, though, we’re going to have to be patient. The Last Photograph doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, so there’s no word on where we’ll eventually be able to watch it.
At least we finally have a first look. After more than 20 years of waiting, we’ll happily take that teaser while we wait for the full trailer.
