I love spooky movies and basically everything to do with Halloween. If you’re like me, then you’re probably always looking for your next movie to watch. You’re in luck, here’s a list of some must watch animated Halloween movies!
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a classic for a reason. Watching Linus wait in the pumpkin patch for the great pumpkin is a staple of Halloween. Nothing captures the spirit of trick or treating quite like this movie. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown isn’t going to be airing on television this year. Instead you’ll be able to stream it for free on Apple TV+ on October 30th, October 31st, and November 31st.
The Book of Life (2014)
Okay, so technically this is a Dios De Los Muertos movie, but the Day of the Dead does begin on Halloween. The Book of Life tells the story of two friends in love with the same girl and a wager between the ruler of the Land of the Remembered and the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten. I love this movie, the story, the songs, and the animation are all fantastic. The Book of Life is available to rent on Amazon.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
We can debate whether or not The Nightmare Before Christmas is really a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie, but I’m pretty sure the answer is both. Pumpkin King Jack Skellington kidnaps Santa Clause so he can take over the role to disastrous results. The Nightmare Before Christmas is available to stream on Disney Plus.
Hotel Transylvania series
Humans discover a resort for monsters run by Dracula and shenanigans ensue. Dracula tries to make sure that the human doesn’t find out about the monsters and that his daughter doesn’t fall in love with him. There are three films in the Hotel Transylvania series, so if you like the first, you can keep watching. The first film is available to watch on Starz, while the second and third are available to rent on Amazon.
Coco (2017)
Another movie focusing on the Day of the Dead, Coco, is all about family and familial expectations. Coco is a beautiful movie, the animation, the music and the story. If you haven’t watched it yet, then you are really missing out. Coco is available to watch on Disney Plus.
Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
Kiki is a witch who moves to a village to live alone for a year, something that all witches in training must do. While there she sets up a courier service, but when doubt sets in she must overcome it. Kiki’s Delivery Service is available to watch on HBO Max.
Paranorman (2012)
Of all the stop motion animated movies on this list, I think Paranorman is my favorite. Norman can see and communicate with the dead and uses his power to uncover a town mystery. You can watch Paranorman on Netflix.
Corpse Bride (2005)
Corpse Bride is haunting and romantic. When a groom accidentally proposes to a dead girl, he gets involved with the world of the dead. Corpse Bride is available to rent on Amazon.
Monster House (2006)
Everyone has that one house in their hometown that kids believe is haunted. Well, in Monster House, the house really is haunted. As Halloween approaches, three kids try to find a way to defeat the haunted house. There are a few genuine scares in this movie as well as heartbreaking moments. Monster House is available to rent on Amazon.
Coraline (2009)
Honestly, Coraline gave me nightmares as a child. When Coraline finds another world where her parents pay attention to her, life seems better, but things aren’t what they seem. Coraline is available to watch on Starz.
Frankenweenie (2012)
In this animated Frankenstein update, a boy wants to bring his dog back to life. Frankenweenie is available to watch on Disney Plus.
