Vacations are something we could all use especially now. Who wouldn’t want to have a relaxing time sitting on a beach with some nice drinks, enjoying the fresh ocean air? that is not the case with upcoming Netflix film The Lost Daughter.
Based on the book of the same name by Elena Ferrante, The Lost Daughter is a film that shows you can’t always get away from the past. Even on vacation. The film which stars Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson is one we have been waiting to see. The film which was written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal has been making the rounds during the film festival circuit and has had rave reviews everywhere it’s been shown.
Both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Dakota Johnson have also nabbed some awards. Gyllenhaal received the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival and Dakota was the recipient of the Middleburg Film Festival’s Spotlight Actor Award. Hearing all of that has us even more excited to see it. This is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s debut as a film director so its pretty amazing she’s already seeing some recognition for this film.
Here’s the synopsis:
A woman’s beach vacation takes a dark turn when her obsession with a young mother forces her to confront the secrets of her past.
Olivia Colman stars as Leda the woman on the beach vacation and Dakota Johnson plays Nina the young mother she’s obsessed with. The trailer already has us hooked. Take a look for yourself.
That was intense right? not like any beach vacation we’ve ever seen. And what’s the deal with the doll obsession? we have so many questions. Also can we talk about how good Dakota Johnson looks with that dark hair? I mean come on! don’t even get me started on the tat on her torso. Yes, I am revealing my Dakota Johnson girl crush, do I care? nope! The Lost Daughter has been on my ever growing TBR and I think now is the perfect time to crack it open and start reading.
The Lost Daughter also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Ed Harris.
The Lost Daughter hits select theatres in December and will be available on Netflix December 31st.
