The season finale is here! In The Rookie 4×22 “Day in the Hole” there is only Chenford. There’re other things, a lot of action, a lot of Pete too, we love the strong women on this show but, to be honest, Chenford is what makes this season finale AWESOME. Time for a review!
Here we go!
Finally, The Rookie 4×22 “Day in the Hole” gave us what we wanted: Chenford. Chenford in industrial quantities. And we’re happy! They’ve come a long way and this episode left them unable to deny what they feel. Until now, they denied it even to themselves, but after that kiss, they can’t deny it anymore. And that turns their lives upside down. But let’s start from the beginning.
I love this innocent flirtation back and forth that they can’t stop doing. It’s like they don’t realize what they’re doing…but they do. As the case progresses, we see that their criminal alters egos are identical to them. And they’re together. It’s like a sign that Chenford is going to happen. It’s the universe talking or the show talking directly to us. Chenford is real.

But where things start to change in The Rookie 4×22 “Day in the Hole” is at the moment of that kiss. THE KISS. At the beginning of that scene, the two of them are comfortable together, almost…relaxed.
There’s this little underlying flirtation between them and they’re close…but not that close. So, Tim brings up the subject. Almost embarrassed, almost…shy. He knows they have to do it. They have to pretend in front of everyone that they’re a couple and they need to be believable.
So Tim tries to convince himself that that’s it and that’s why he’s bringing this up. Tim tries to convince himself that it’s not going to be a big deal. But his heart is racing, he can barely look at her face, and Lucy’s little teasing doesn’t help.
He, deep down, knows that nothing will be the same after this. Lucy feels the same way, which is why she has such a hard time putting herself in the situation. Both of their hearts scream at them that this kiss is going to change EVERYTHING.
And the heart is never wrong.
At first, Tim keeps it short and devoid of feelings. Almost a clash of lips. Tim fights with everything he has not to give in and kiss her like he’s dying to. He keeps repeating to himself that it’s just work, nothing more. This is how it has to be. But he doesn’t count on Lucy not being willing to leave things like that. They just can’t kiss and have it all be an awkward lip clash. Lucy pulls him to her side and kisses him senselessly.
That’s THE KISS.
Everything is different after that in The Rookie 4×22 “Day in the Hole.” It’s passionate, it’s hot, and it’s filled with the feelings that the two of them have held back for so long. And that changes them.
I’m sure if Tamara hadn’t interrupted them, they would have ended up having more than just a make-out session. But Tamara’s entrance brings them back to reality. They’re not supposed to be doing this, it’s not supposed to feel this good.
After this, neither of them knows how to move on or look at each other. They’re both with other people but when they kiss them they don’t feel a tenth of what they felt with that kiss. So Tim and Lucy wonder “now what?” The two feel that more things separate them than those that unite them but that kiss… that kiss was perfect.

Until this moment, both of them successfully managed not to acknowledge what is happening between them but after that kiss, they can’t ignore it anymore. It’s there, right in front of them… and it changes everything.
Lucy – and us – almost hoped that the next day, Tim would admit that he felt the same as her, that that kiss was a turning point for him too, and that he’s willing to live that adventure with her, wherever it takes them. But that’s not Tim. Tim needs to be in control and his feelings for Lucy…it’s completely out of his control and he doesn’t know what to do from here.
We ask ourselves the same question: “now what?” The Rookie 4×22 “Day in the Hole” brought Chenford to the point where neither of them can ignore what is happening anymore, season 5 will give us the answer on what they’re going to do from there.
I think that the two will try to take a step back and, at the end of season 5, they will dare to embrace what they feel. What is your bet?
In another order of things, it will be hard for me not to see Nyla training new cops but I think it’s a good decision. I mean, she’s very good at it but it’s not who she is or what she likes. She doesn’t have to settle.

The only thing I don’t like about this is that we may see her less, although The Rookie managed to give us enough of Angela, so I hope the same goes for Nyla.
PS: The way The Rookie 4×22 “Day in the Hole” started is the way all scary movies start. But then it became an action movie. Not bad.
The Rookie airs Sundays at 10/9 on ABC and will return with new episodes this fall. Thank you for joining us for another season!
