We’re back! The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard” shows us Celina Juarez’s first day as a rookie with Nolan as her training officer. In the episode, Lucy stumbles upon an essential clue about Rosalind as Chenford yearns for each other. Ready?
Here we go!
Instinct vs Experience

Nolan’s first day as a training officer in The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard” was a mess. Vanessa Rojas Celina Juarez is an officer with very good instincts but a certain disdain for the rules that Nolan must polish. I find the debate that Nolan and Juarez had about instinct versus experience and rules quite interesting.
I think they were both superb at some point in the middle of the debate. Celina was too focused on her being right about the stop she made, so the rest was little more than semantics. And Nolan was too intent on disregarding Celina’s instinct, without digging into it a bit more.
In the end, as always, virtue is in the middle. Celina’s instinct in The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard” is real because she has a past that forced her to observe more than a kid her age should. So Nolan shouldn’t dismiss it like it’s nothing. But Juarez must understand that the rules are important, and much more so in her work. Not following a rule can mean that a criminal goes free. So Celina can’t just go by her instincts.
We’re glad that the two of them have come to an understanding because they were both partly right and partly wrong on certain points. Celina must trust Nolan about her instincts and he must give her credit and guide her on how to act, training her to succeed.
Celina reminds us a lot of Lucy in terms of following her instincts and trying to help no matter what. Perhaps, she would fit in better with Lucy. But, at the same time, this clash between Nolan and Celina can be interesting, since she is more instinctive and impulsive and he is calmer and tries to stick to the procedure as much as he can.
In any case, Vanessa Rojas disappeared from Chicago P.D. without explanation…and we already know why: she is infiltrated in The Rookie! (Wink, wink). We hope that in this show she has more paths than in Chicago P.D.
Traumas and Therapies…

Like Juarez, Lucy also has a very sharp instinct and she knew that something in the group that Chris became a part of was off. However, even though she was right to be concerned, I think she was wrong in her approach in The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard.”
All traumas are different and how to deal with trauma is something very personal. I mean, what worked for Lucy or Wes to deal with their trauma may not work for Chris and vice versa. Lucy didn’t need a therapy group for Rosalind but Chris feels that he does and that’s perfectly fine.
I love Lucy but I don’t think she has the right to tell Chris how to deal with his trauma or almost make him feel like he’s doing it wrong. That group wasn’t the one and worrying about someone you care about like Lucy is doing in The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard,” is the normal reaction. But there comes a point where Lucy has to be vigilant, just in case, but she also has to stay out of it and support Chris, keeping her concern for herself.
Chris must do what he needs to do to get over what happened. And if Lucy confronts him about it, apart from her not being fair, she will further deteriorate the relationship that she has with Chris. I would almost say that it would be the final nail in the coffin of their relationship. If you look closely, everything seems too awkward between them.
Lucy is still with him because she still feels too guilty to break up with him, especially when he has just recovered from such a brutal assassination attempt. And Chris realizes that something is wrong but he tries to pretend that it is not, forcing things because it’s easier that way and now he doesn’t know if he could face a breakup. But, be that as it may, this relationship’s days are numbered.
Longing Chenford

Even though Chenford has been apart in The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard,” they can’t stop thinking about each other. If Lucy’s longing look wasn’t proof enough, Tim’s concern must be.
He was having a busy shift with Thorsen but noticed Lucy’s absence on the radio. That tells us that, despite the distance that he imposed between the two, he can’t help but be aware of her, of her words on the radio, just to hear her voice and know that she is fine.
So when he hasn’t listened to her in a while he knows something is seriously wrong and he worries to death about her. Tim doesn’t hesitate to go to where Lucy is to help her, silently pleading with whoever would listen that she’s okay. And that melts us. When Chenford gets together they are going to be explosive.
PS: Laura and Garza from The Rookie: Feds appear in The Rookie 5×03 “Dye Hard” in the purest One Chicago style. Their goal is to follow a lead on Rosalind. And the end of this episode kicks off what will be the first crossover between the two shows and we hope they catch Rosalind once and for all.
The Rookie Season 5 airs Sundays at 10/9 on ABC.
