Time for a new review! The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive” is an episode in which the turn of our favorite police officers is quite special. And while some couples take a step forward, others take steps back…and Chenford is in the middle, moving slowly but surely. Ready?
Here we go!
Worried Girlfriend

Chenford looks like a married couple in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive,” I swear. Lucy needs to visit Tim and check for herself that he is okay. When she does and sees Ashley there…something in her heart aches. It’s like a clear reminder that he already has someone by his side. However, there is something that prevents Lucy from leaving.
When the doctor tells Tim what’s going on and no one asks anything about the risks, Lucy goes along. In retrospect, she knows that this is not exactly her place, but Ashley’s. But she doesn’t ask anything and Lucy knows Tim won’t so she fucks it all up and behaves like what she is: a concerned girlfriend.
Lucy may not have that title *yet* but not having it doesn’t change reality. Tim loves her and Lucy reciprocates. Lucy is not going to ask for forgiveness or permission to worry about him. And we love her for it.
Is Retiring the Best Solution?

Ashley doesn’t seem to mind. But for her, what happened to Tim in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive” is a turning point. Ashley spent her whole life worrying and looking out for her father. He didn’t want to retire until he had no choice and that meant that Ashley lived worried and with her heart in her mouth every day until her father retired. Tim is also a police officer and Ashley accepted that she was going to experience something similar with him.
However, thanks to this injury, Tim can retire. This changes everything for Ashley. She no longer needs to live with that anguish. She and Tim can be together and see where life takes them. But Tim is not ready for that. He loves his job but being a cop is more than just a job for him, it’s part of who he is. And Tim isn’t ready to let go of that part of him yet.
Ashley gets excited about that possibility but her illusions are shattered when she realizes the reality. Tim will retire one day…but not now. She loves him but she knows she couldn’t take what she went through with her father again. Tim could have chosen her and he didn’t, just like her father. And Ashley gets it, she really does, but she can’t go through that again.
So Ashley does something very brave: she puts herself first. Ashley would never force Tim to give up a part of himself unready, but she can’t repeat history either. So they should break up. And yeah, it’s the best decision for everyone.
Married Chenford in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive”

After the day is done, Lucy’s thoughts continue with Tim. She worries when Grey tells her that he had surgery. She runs to the hospital to see Tim. And there he is, alive, awake… and alone.
Ashley’s absence doesn’t go unnoticed by Lucy but Tim decides not to tell her what happened just yet. It doesn’t matter now, not right now. Telling Lucy about the breakup would raise questions Tim isn’t ready to answer.
Lucy was dying of worry in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive” and nobody said anything to her! She’s mad and I would be too. But Tim didn’t want her to worry about him. And that’s so cute I can forgive him. Of course, Tim tries to back down when he realizes what he said but it doesn’t matter.
He said it and the implications are clear. Tim was facing surgery that could leave him paralyzed but his thoughts were on Lucy. Trying not to make her worry too much about him. That speaks much louder than anything else.
And Lucy stays. She doesn’t plan to leave Tim alone. Lucy doesn’t have to do it but she does it because that’s where she wants to be: right next to him. For Tim, that’s a clear answer to his previous confession… and he smiles. Lucy was by his side in more ways than one in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive.” She is always by his side. She never leaves him because when he’s not with her, he’s thinking about her.
Seriously, we want these two to stop dancing around each other and give themselves a chance.
A Wedding in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive?”

Bailey and Nolan grew on us out of the blue. Their last scene in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive” put a smile on our faces because they are super cute. The two of them went through a lot together and they deserve to be happy.
Nolan was going to propose a while ago but Bailey’s husband showed up and everything went off. However, we are sure that Bailey would have said “yes.” Both have been ready for the next step for a while.
As for the proposal, I’m a hopeless romantic and I’m very classical in these matters. So I want flowers, hearts, and for him/her to kneel. That said, I have to admit that I saw this proposition as lovely. It was so natural and so simple that it had its own magic.
When you’re so sure of something, when you meet the right person, you don’t need something big to move forward together. Being together is as easy as breathing, why should taking another step to be more complicated than that? So, despite my classic style, I have to confess that this proposal won me over.
Other Stuff in The Rookie 5×05 “The Fugitive”

- I loved meeting the Lopez family. Even if they came with their own set of problems.
- Angela’s mother’s final speech brought tears to my eyes. It’s a way of acknowledging her mistakes and the value of her daughter.
- Thorsen and Angela’s mother is a duo that we didn’t know we needed.
- Wesley risked a lot so that his mother-in-law would accept him… luckily it was worth it.
- The entire Lopez family dinner gave me years of life.
- Lucy in boss mode was one of the best things about the episode! Is it a clue to the future?
- How the hell did Smitty manage to rise so high in the police force? It’s something I will never understand.
- After Ashley and Tim’s breakup, it only remains to be seen when Chris and Lucy will break up.
- I could live in those Chenford looks with so many hidden feelings.
