We watch a lot of TV and movies! And we listen to a lot of music, podcasts, audiobooks…so yeah, we’re fangirling over a lot of things! Each week we come together to highlight all the feels they give us throughout the week. On these Fangirlish Feels of the Week, there are five categories and many thoughts! Ready?
Here we go!
What You’re Fangirling Over This Week
Rachel: Well, it seems that promotion for Bridgerton season 3 has well and truly started. And this week, we got season 2 bloopers, a romantic Kanthony character promo video, fun “Passing The Torch” videos with the leads of season 2 and 3, and, best of all, a Polin promo video IN FRONT OF A MIRROR. Book fans will understand how big of a deal that is.
All of this content was a pleasure to watch but that mirror video was incredible. The staging of it was so sensual, with the hand touches and the looks between Colin and Penelope. The way the music changed when Colin appeared behind Pen in the mirror was stunning too. It sent every Polin fan spiralling and we probably won’t stop until we get season 3. And maybe not even then.
Ashley T.: What am I NOT fangirling over? First, we’ve got new Star Trek: Discovery interviews dropping here on Fangirlish with David Ajala and Doug Jones. We’ve got also got Mary Wiseman, Blu del Barrio, Wilson Cruz, Michelle Paradise, Alex Kurtzman, and of course, our Queen and Captain, Sonequa Martin-Green. Also, David Ajala totally reshared the screenshot I took of him and Doug fist-bumping after I asked my question in my interview with them.
Next, X-Men ‘97 did not have to go that hard last week AND this week, but they did. Good grief. My heart. More on that in a bit.
Finally, I had an episode of The Video Store Podcast drop last week on one of my favorite quirky actresses, Lori Petty. Lori saw it on Twitter and liked my tweet! If she listened, I hope she enjoyed it. It made my day for her to acknowledge me in some small way. Thanks, Lori. You’re the best.
Ashley W.: What a fine life it is for fellow Newsies: The Musical fans! Jeremy Jordan and Corey Cott, who both played Jack Kelly on Broadway, are back on Broadway on the same day! Their respective shows, The Great Gatsby and The Heart of Rock and Roll, both began previews on March 29.
They’re my top two favorite Broadway performers and huge reasons why I became a musical theatre fan. So it’s very exciting and heartwarming to know they’re back on stage doing what they love. As of writing this, I’ve already cried about their returns, and I’m sure I’ll have cried several more times by the time this is published.
Also, Invincible episode 2×06: “It’s Not That Simple” has a scene where Mark is talking to the creator of the fictitious Seance Dog comic book series at a comic con, and it’s a hilariously great meta joke that doubles as a nod to the comics.
The episode as a whole was great, but that scene remains a standout. Also, the season finale was so good! Some fans may have been disappointed at what *that* cameo ended up being (if you know, you know), but I still thought it was so fun and such a great nod to the comics. I loved the Batman reference comics callback as well, and the last line of the finale was delivered perfectly.
Amanda W.: I’m also fangirling over the new Kanthony promo video and Corey Cott and Jeremy Jordan returning to Broadway. Also, I believe this is the first time Corey Cott, Jeremy Jordan, AND Aaron Tveit will all be on Broadway at the same time, and my Broadway fangirl heart can hardly take it!
Amanda P.: I don’t care if it’s repetitive, I have to join the chorus of “Polin! Mirror!” here. I absolutely love the way Netflix has been winking at fans with every piece of promo. Marketing is harder than it seems, folks, and they are nailing it. Here’s hoping the coming season is every bit as steamy and squee-worthy as the tiny nuggets we’ve gotten so far!
WTF Moment of the Week
Rachel: I hate to sound like a broken record, but for a good WTF moment this week, I can’t believe we actually got a Polin mirror promo video for Bridgerton season 3. IS THIS REAL LIFE??? And it’s the first Polin piece of promo we got. We don’t even have a teaser trailer yet. They STARTED OUT with the mirror reference. WHAT IS THE ACTUAL SEASON GOING TO DO TO US???
Ashley T.: X-Men ‘97 has had me yelling at the TV for the past two weeks. When I watched the original X-Men series growing up, my most hated character was Mr. Sinister. Now they bring him back right out of the gate for X-Men ‘97?! Good grief.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a good WTF because it’s making for really great storytelling, but man, they are going way harder with this show than I ever anticipated. And now we know that Forge actually helped create that tech that took Storm’s powers?! I’m going to need a stiff drink before I watch the next one.
Ashley W.: The Rookie, episode 6×04: “Training Day,” made me sad and angry because Lucy deserves so much better than being tasked to watch dog vomit! She had her redemption moment later on in the episode, but still. Being told to keep an eye on a pile of dog vomit beside a dumpster in a public park is far from riveting and, I imagine, can feel very demeaning.
Amanda P.: I said this on Twitter, but I have to repeat it here: the only thing more fun than something huge and shocking happening (especially something everyone wanted but thought would never happen) in one of your own fandoms is watching fans lose it over something like that happening in a fandom you know next-to-nothing about. Which is my long-winded way of saying, congrats 9-1-1 fans, I’m very happy for you!
What We’re Listening to This Week
Raquel: These two weeks I’ve been listening to music that reminds me of my teenage era! I’m making a playlist on Apple Music and that led me to listen to songs that I thought I had forgotten. Sometimes it is good to revisit the past and through music is one of the best ways to do it.
Ashley T.: I’ve been slowly catching up on Gene-ology, which is a podcast looking at the non-Star Trek work of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. Gene’s mostly known for his sci-fi work, like Star Trek and Andromeda, but he actually wrote a lot of cop shows and westerns before Star Trek.
It’s been fascinating to see how many of the cop shows and westerns have a bit of Star Trek in them, long before Star Trek existed. It’s worth checking out if you like Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, or have an interest in TV history.
Also, it’s another few spins of Women in Music Pt. III by HAIM for me. I’ve said it before, but if I don’t listen to this album at least once a month, someone needs to come check my pulse.
Jasmine: Well, I’m currently listening to Beyonce’s new album Cowboy Carter. It is a masterpiece. The creativity behind it, you feel like you’re in a movie. The transitions track by track, the lyricism, the vocals, the musicality. Just perfect.
What We Rewatched This Week
Rachel: I don’t know if I’ll catch the new Monsterverse film in theaters but I did rewatch Godzilla vs Kong and seeing these two legendary creatures fight each other and then join forces is still a thrill, even with the flawed story.
Ashley T.: Tank Girl. Again. I don’t think I will stop watching it any time soon. Plus, March 30 marked the 29th anniversary of the film, so I did a celebratory watch last Saturday to chill out after all my Easter prep.
I also rewatched The Menu for an episode I recorded this week for the Creepy and Geeky podcast. That’s a great horror movie if you want a meta-commentary about the restaurant industry, want to watch Anya Taylor-Joy be amazing, or if you want to introduce a horror movie to someone who doesn’t necessarily like horror.
Ashley W.: I recently did a Captain America movie marathon (happy 10-year anniversary to Captain America: The WinterSoldier!), which made me want to rewatch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. So I did, and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed the show.
Re-experiencing Sam and Bucky’s dynamic is so fun, and watching Sam come to terms with accepting the Captain America mantle is an emotional journey worth revisiting. I can’t wait to see Sam as Cap again. Also, I’d like Bucky to bring a cookies and cream cake to one of my family functions. Please, and thank you.
Amanda P.: The 2015 Cinderella is finally on Disney+ after being missing for quite some time (it was licensed to another streamer for a while). And you know what? It holds up!
So many of the live-action Disney movies feel like “meh” cash-grabs, but this one really does it right. Expanding characters who actually needed expanding upon, casting excellent actors, and going all-out to get the iconic visuals right – I get the warm-and-fuzzy feeling I should from this one, and that’s what matters.
Badass Character of the Week
Ashley T.: Jean Grey in X-Men ‘97. Both of them. No real spoilers for last week’s episode, but if you’ve seen it, you know why. It broke my heart.
Ashley W.: I’m going to have to agree with my fellow Ashley on this one. The heartbreak and confusion Jean Grey experienced – and will continue to go through moving forward – is simply agonizing to just think about.
Jasmine: I’m going with Trina Robinson on General Hospital. Watching her finally truly allow herself to feel the grief over losing Spencer was beautiful. She had been keeping it stuffed down for so long and it was just too much.
She was able to express her anger and hatred for Esme for ruining her Happily Ever After with Spencer. But what I loved most, was that she went to Spencer’s grave site and let out her truth of the pain she’s been experiencing. It’s a brave thing to give yourself permission to do something like this.
