We’re back one last time! Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ also known as the series finale, brings one of our all-time favorite shows to a close. And it highlights why Jamie and Claire always were and always will be the heart and soul of this show. Ready?
Here we go!
Jamie and Claire Carry Outlander’s Emotional Series Finale

Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us’ is a complicated series finale to review. Because some things work very well, but others don’t. And it hurts. What works well? Jamie & Claire.
When they’re together and they’re the focus, everything is better. It feels like the show we love and have been here for for eight seasons. But even they can’t hide the fact that Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us’ suffers from some questionable plot decisions that don’t quite work.
The series finale begins like any other morning on the Ridge…except it isn’t. Destiny awaits at Kings Mountain just around the corner, and with it come the goodbyes. Jamie and Claire cling to each other, dreading the inevitable moment of parting.
But more than that, they gaze, caress, surrender…and memorize each other. As if they wanted to tattoo each other on their skin, anchoring it so deeply it could never be broken. Jamie doesn’t want to leave anything unsaid. And Claire tries not to think about what that means.
The best thing about Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ is that they don’t really need to say anything to understand each other. Jamie knows the depth of Claire’s love for him, and vice versa. Claire also knows Jamie’s need to protect her. He already did so when they were on the brink of the abyss at Culloden.
But this time she won’t leave him. That is her home, he is her home. And if he isn’t there…at least she’ll have the family and the life they built together to search for him on the edge. That’s why she throws herself headlong into the battle, because she doesn’t intend to let searching for him on the edge be all she has left.
And when Claire finds him safe and sound amidst the corpses and blood in OutlanderSeason 8 Episode 10, ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ she can hardly believe they’ve made it. But, as always with them, nothing is ever that simple.
When they had victory and the future in their hands, that wretch killed Jamie. And that final moment when Jamie is saying goodbye to Claire, with his last breath…we couldn’t stop crying.
Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan proved once again that they were born to play Claire and Jamie. Especially Balfe, because those moments of Claire’s grief, her cries of despair, the way she couldn’t stop crying…Balfe’s performance gave us goosebumps. In the best possible way.

The Series Finale’s Biggest Problems Hurt the Ending

That said, while the more romantic and nostalgic aspects of Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ work perfectly for a series finale, the more functional aspects don’t. Jamie and Claire’s dialogues give us a lot of information that should have been shown on screen.
Why show so much about Fanny or Faith but not show that key conversation between Jamie and Mandy? It’s fine that Jamie tells us the baby isn’t a Traveler, but that’s a scene we should have seen in earlier episodes. They just need to cut some unnecessary and repetitive scenes to include it.
That’s just one example of something that was happening throughout the season and was more evident than ever in the series finale.
Beyond Jamie and Claire, the farewells between Jamie and those he loves most also didn’t quite work in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us.’ He really only said goodbye to Brianna—the will thing doesn’t count. But Ian is like a son to him, and Roger too, so why don’t we see him say a few words to them? It doesn’t seem to make sense. Just like the fact that we don’t see Claire say goodbye to either of them.
Even the farewell between Jamie and Brianna, while emotional—kudos to Sam Heughan here—feels somewhat rushed and too…restrained for what’s happening. Jamie is trying to hold back his tears and appear strong, but we don’t understand why Brianna doesn’t break down here.
Brianna is saying goodbye to her father forever in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us.’ She knows it. This isn’t just any battle. And from the scene, it looks like anything but. She finally told him she loved him, but we missed a tight hug, more tears, more…feeling. It’s a scene that’s too cold for what it’s representing.

Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 Finally Explains Jamie’s Ghost

On another note, the series finale tries to explain everything it needed to explain, like Jamie’s ghost and the forget-me-nots on the stones. Connecting everything is a good idea, but it feels a little…strange.
The explanation for Jamie’s ghost works. He dies at Kings Mountain, and his ghost visits Claire, just as he promised. But it’s not entirely clear why he appears on the stones. Was it a nod to the fandom? Because we all wanted to see Jamie touching those stones—and his disappointed face when he realized he didn’t travel back in time will haunt us for a long time.
But beyond that, the explanation in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ regarding the forget-me-nots on the stones is poetic and beautiful…but somewhat disconcerting. Don’t get us wrong, we love that it’s Jamie himself who lures Claire to the stones, and we like the idea of the loop—Jamie’s death brings Claire to the past, to him, and Claire saves him at the end—but then why show us that Fanny is a time traveler?
It was a shock at the time, but we expected more from this storyline than just shock value. So the series finale missed a golden opportunity by not showing us Fanny planting the forget-me-nots for Claire to find.

Outlander Season 8 Episode 10’s Ending Doesn’t Fully Work

On another note, the battle in Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ was incredibly tense, and that was awesome. But Jamie dying? That didn’t work as well as it probably did in the script.
First of all, it was too long. The last time we saw Claire use her blue power on the baby, it was dying or had just died—like herself or Faith when Master Raymond saved them. Jamie had been dead for too long for it to be believable that Claire brought him back.
Furthermore, we didn’t even see Claire use her power that much in the series finale, unlike how we saw her use it on that baby and how we saw Master Raymond use it on her. And are we supposed to believe that, magically, Claire’s hair turned full white and that’s how she unleashed all her power, managing to revive Jamie after he’d been dead for so long? Sure, Jan.
Besides, this ending isn’t very clear. Do Jamie and Claire die and wake up in a parallel dimension, or did Claire bring him back to the world they knew? We don’t need shock value or to decipher what’s happening. In a series finale, we need to understand everything, we need to know everything. Give us an ending, whatever that may be, not a puzzle.
The idea that it was Claire and the love she shares with Jamie that brought him back, more than her power was good, but the execution didn’t work—although remembering all the moments that led them there made us cry like never before.
If that weren’t enough, the pacing of Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ is uneven, to say the least. The episode lingers too long on the moments leading up to the battle and doesn’t do justice to the moments that follow. Why didn’t we see Jamie and Claire with their family on the Ridge in the final scene? Or at least somethingafter Jamie started breathing again.
That last scene might work as shock value, but as the series’ finale? Not at all. If this were a season finale, things would be different, but a series finale shouldn’t aim for shock value. It should do justice to the characters and the story. This series finale didn’t do that.
Now, playing devil’s advocate here, all those scenes leading up to the battle were necessary. But we should have seen them in the previous episode. Outlander Season 8 Episode 10, ‘And the World Was All Around Us,’ needed to focused on the battle and its aftermath, thus allowing time for the after.
This is a direct consequence of spending too much time during the season on contrived storylines that went nowhere—like Faith or Fanny—and leaving most of the important elements until the end.
Ultimately, the series finale is uneven, a true reflection of this last season, where what works—Jamie & Claire and the nostalgia—works brilliantly, and what doesn’t—like the pacing or prioritizing shock value over doing justice to the story—doesn’t work massively.
Despite everything, is Outlander Season 8 Episode 10 ‘And the World Was All Around Us’ worth your time? Definitely.
But we expected much more.
