We’re back! Lucifer 6×08 “Save The Devil, Save The World” is a strange mix between emotional scenes that makes us cry non-stop and scenes forced to have a comic point that actually make us roll our eyes. Time for review!
Here we go!
In Lucifer 6×08 “Save The Devil, Save The World” we see the consequences of the end of the previous episode and how for Ella it is not being easy to digest all this and less when she finds out more and more disturbing things. She is still very disappointed and angry that everyone hid the truth from her. Lucifer, Maze, Dan… everyone tells her that she is important, that she was vital to so many things… and that they trust her, that she is part of the family… but, for Ella, all that is garbage. If it were true, they would have told her everything.
And she is right.
She was their friend for the love of God, she was already involved in all this, she suffered a crisis of faith due to Charlotte’s death, she suffered because she did not know where she was and all the time, her best friends, her family, had the key to make her feel better, to comfort her, so that, despite everything, she could remember Charlotte with a smile, knowing that she was happy and smiling in heaven and they simply let her suffer.
They just let her wither, they let her lose faith, they… they abandoned her. Her family abandoned her. So now everything they’re saying sounds like a lie, it hardly sounds like an apology. Of course, they all had her reasons to do what they did and not tell her anything, none of them wanted to hurt Ella on purpose but the road to hell is founded on good intentions and, in hindsight, it is what they did.
She feels hurt, so hurt that she doesn’t know if she can trust them again, in all of them, so hurt that she can’t believe their words. She can’t believe Lucifer, or Maze, not even Dan because yes, she was there, with them, every step of the way, but they didn’t choose for her to be, not really, nothing was enough for them to choose to tell her about the truth. They did not consider her worthy enough of telling her. And that is the crudest and purest truth …
Or is it what Ella believes to be the truth. It was not so. They all screwed up, yes, but not because they thought that she did not deserve to know the whole truth, but because, as much as it may seem, they are human and they are wrong and they were wrong in a big way but that doesn’t mean that they don’t trust her or that they don’t love her.
That’s what Ella learns by talking to Carol. He is the last link in the chain for Ella to begin to forgive and understand – and we have never loved him as much as now – because Ella wants to tell Carol everything but she cannot because it is not her secret. Here, Ella puts herself a bit in the shoes of some of her friends.
But what is decisive is what Carol tells her “you don’t need to know all of someone’s secrets to trust, just know their heart.” The disappointment Ella felt with everyone led her to wonder if she really knew them, if she ever knew them. She doubted about her opinion of them, about whether she really knew their hearts and here, Ella realizes that she always did. She may not have told her this big secret about themselves but they did show her who they were.
And that’s enough.
And it’s time to cry.
Revisiting some of the situations she went through with Lucifer through Linda’s eyes doesn’t go well for Chloe. She realizes that Lucifer has her on a kind of pedestal, as if she is perfect … but she is not. She is afraid that he is not aware of this because what will happen when he does? But Lucifer is aware that Chloe isn’t perfect, it’s just that she… in a way she is to him.
She is always there, she always has that blind faith in him and she always sees her so secure in everything she does… yes, Lucifer knows that she has flaws but she is simply the perfect woman for him.
Despite how sweet this is, Chloe’s fears have a much deeper root. She relived those moments when Lucifer walked away, the moments when he abandoned her and all the pain came back suddenly, all the suffering, the rage, the broken heart, the bitter taste of bile in her mouth, what it was like to have than learn to live without him. She thought they were over all this but Rory just confessed that he disappeared again …
What if Lucifer disappears again for the same reason? The advances in their relationship are a trigger and, hell, they made a lot of progress in a short time. But Lucifer would never do it, no longer, he changed, he evolved and this is the first time that he recognizes it out loud. He is no longer that man, he would never choose to leave her. He would always choose her. There is no other option for him. She, Rory and Trixie, his family, is the priority.
And Lucifer sounds so sincere, so convincing … Chloe looks into his eyes, those eyes that she understands so well and that she always shows his soul and she sees the truth in them, as she could not be from another way. However, there are still things to say …
Chloe finally confesses what she’s going to do with Amenadiel and I love, I just love the way Lucifer knows that being a detective is who she is, not something she does and the way he supports her. That is how he met her, it is part of the reason why he fell in love with her, he would never be angry about it.
And Rory, her wings… they still worry Chloe. Why did she feel that she should protect herself from everyone? Did she fail as a mother? This worries her because she has Trixie but being the mother of two daughters is not the same and less when one of them is so hurt and so angry … but the truth is quite the opposite. Rory became self-actualizing because of how well he did things with her, because of how well she took care of her and what she taught her. She was there… he wasn’t.
Lucifer always failed her … because he never loved her. It’s the truth. Just it is not … Lucifer loves her since he knows she exists, he loves her as only he knows how to love: with all his heart, with all his dark soul. But he knows that no matter how much he says, Rory will never believe him, she is too disappointed and hurt for words to suffice.
The facts are better.
Thus, in a brilliant mother-daughter parallel, Lucifer orders Rory to shoot him, he will become vulnerable for her, to show her how much he cares about her. Rory is with the gun in her hand. That’s what she came here to do, kill him, but now that she has the chance it’s hard for her to pull the trigger. She didn’t want to but her heart softened when she had the opportunity to meet him, her hatred subsided. It’s not as easy as she thought it would be.
But she pulls the trigger …
And Lucifer bleeds. He does. Rory can hardly believe it, her father loves her. It’s the one thing she ever needed, the one thing she ever wanted. For the first time, Lucifer’s conscious mind and subconscious worked in unison… to show her that he cares about her. That she is lovable and that her father loves her with everything, no matter what.
It seems such an unfathomable truth now.
This lowers Rory’s barriers, her father was willing to die for her and she no longer doubts how Lucifer feels for her, the hopes that she fought so hard to kill resurface with all its strength now.
And suddenly, Lucifer realizes that he is ready to take his throne as God. He needs to do it and after Rory finally trusts him and believes how he feels about her, there is no reason to delay. Just … he doesn’t want to. Until this moment, Lucifer had been guided by what was expected of him, trying not to disappoint everyone but when the time comes to actually do it … he knows he can’t because that’s not his place. It is not his calling. He accepts for the first time that he doesn’t want to be God, we call it character growth around here …
Lucifer and Linda… goddess, we had already half recovered from the crying and we are here again. But for good reason, it’s a scene that really rips our hearts out without asking why it’s… it’s the whole story. It’s a whole story of Lucifer’s growth and Linda’s learning along the way. After everything that has happened, Linda felt like a failure because she could not see, this time, what was really going through Lucifer but he is there, in front of her, to tell her how much she has done for him.
Linda has been his guide, his friend, his confidant… she is a big part of the reason for his growth. Lucifer might always misunderstand everything, get the wrong teaching out of their talks and then see how wrong he was… but he learned. And each learning, each emotional obstacle overcome, each wound healed made him the complete man that he is today. And Linda was at the center of it all.
Linda met a broken, hurt, despised man who looked like a monster and helped that man feel whole again, loved, lovable and ready to start his own family, to create his own history. And Linda found a family in the whole process, a family that does not judge her, a crazy, heavenly, hellish and dysfunctional family, but a family that loves her and that is always there for whatever she needs.
When all this started, Linda was lonely but she feel lonely too. Lucifer entered her life like a thrombus and changed everything. She never thought that she could call the devil a friend but she is. And not just him. Linda and Lucifer changed each other’s lives and I love seeing how they recognized what Linda means to Lucifer in this scene. It is like a great little farewell, acknowledging all that Linda was, is and will be for this great journey that is about to end.
And Lucifer was not to give hugs … in this episode he does not stop doing it and that also speaks so much of his evolution … that he does not fear to show what he feels. Don’t be afraid to show love and trust his family enough to be vulnerable. And we confess that we would queue up to be hugged by him (wink, wink.)
Now we go on to comment on the journey to the past and nostalgia that Lucifer 6×08 “Save The Devil, Save The World” has given us. I have divided opinions here, while the real scenes of the show that we have revisited have made me cry and have been meaningful and have simply made me go back to that moment, relive it and put my feelings and emotions to the surface, the scenes that we have seen changed from Linda’s point of view made me roll my eyes.
I’m not a big fan of changing what was already perfect looking for the easy laugh. Lucifer 6×08 “Save The Devil, Save The World” tries so hard to make us laugh with these scenes that it feels all too forced and even ridiculous, it feels empty and without real emotion so yes, they make us roll our eyes. Hard. We don’t think this fits a show like Lucifer and in its final episodes, we have enough emotion to deal with to need filler like that.
Finally, someone cares a little about helping Dan beyond listening to him. Maze is the one who tries to give Dan the solution, she makes him see that the only way to get to the source of his guilt is to close his eyes and confront it, enough to run away, he has to go straight to his worst fears … when Dan does it, understands, finally, what is happening. It is always a pleasure to see Maze helping those who are his family but we insist that no one put a real effort to help Dan before… even though everyone loves him. Because this same thing could have happened like 5 episodes ago.
We don’t think it was on purpose, just a mixture of wanting to carry Dan’s plot all the way so that it could explode in the final episodes and that all the characters had a lot on their plate during the season.
