5 Reasons You Should Be Watching Netflix’s ‘The Stranger’

One day while perusing Facebook, I stumbled upon a Netflix ad for a new drama. I saw two young British women approach an older woman in a parking lot. The two young women knew the older woman’s name, but she didn’t even know them. They then went on to reveal a secret that her daughter had been keeping and that’s where it ended. That’s how I was led to The Stranger.

Based on the book by Harlan Coben, The Stranger, is a twisty thriller about a family man named Adam Price (Richard Armitage) who after being approached by the stranger, goes on a desperate search to uncover the truth about his family.

There is much more to this story than meets the eye though, and I highly recommend giving this one a go. Here are 5 reasons you should be watching The Stranger:

1. It Makes You Think

What would you do if a stranger walked up to you and told you a pretty big secret that someone was keeping from you? Would you want to know the truth? What would you do with it? would you confront the person who was keeping the secret from you? How desperate would you be to learn the truth? would you even want to know the truth? These are the questions you will ask yourself while watching The Stranger.

2. The Setting

In the book The Stranger, the setting is New Jersey. In the Netflix series, it takes place in the UK. I have an obsession with British dramas, and that’s one of the other reasons I was drawn to this show. I wasn’t even aware that it was based on a book until I started watching the first episode. After watching the series, I now want to read the book.

3. The Gender Change

In the book, the stranger is male, but in the show, the stranger is female. I absolutely love this change, because we don’t often see women in roles like these. Hannah John-Kamen (Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, Ant Man and the Wasp) is really good at playing mysterious characters and she nails this role.

4. It Keeps You Guessing

The moment the stranger reveals the first secret, you’re taken on a roller-coaster ride of epic proportions. Adam Price is the first one to be approached by the stranger, and what she tells him completely turns his world upside down. As you follow his story, there are other characters the stranger approaches. Some of the secrets are interconnected, but you have to watch to find out which ones.

5. The Conclusion

Everyone has secrets in this show, but the person I wanted to know the most about was the stranger. I needed to know how she knew everyone’s secrets, and why she felt the need to go and reveal them. I also wanted to know if she herself had any secrets because there is no person on this earth without any.
