I’m doing something a little different for this week’s Gone Too Soon. It’s the very first reality tv show, but not the last. Netflix has just cancelled Next in Fashion, and even though it isn’t a scripted series like everything else I have covered so far, I think it qualifies for Gone Too Soon.
I have been a fan of Project Runway pretty much since the beginning even though I was pretty young when it premiered. I’ve seen almost every season, so I’m definitely going to be interested in another show that requires people to design clothing.
The Gist
Tan France (Queer Eye) and Alexa Chung host a fashion design challenge pairing designers from all over the world to try and find the next big name in fashion. There isn’t much too it other than that. The designers are given challenges and must rise to the occasion to impress the judges. The goal is to push fashion forward. To find designs that will set the trend.
The designers and their designs are interesting and were mostly things that I had never seen before. I enjoyed seeing their unique points of view, learning about their references, and seeing how well they can work together. Most of the teams had different backgrounds and styles. Some worked well together and some didn’t, but it was always entertaining.
I think there were some things that Next in Fashion did better than Project Runway. Some of the challenges were more interesting. I enjoyed that there wasn’t any drama, for the sake of drama and I think that there is room for more than one fashion design show. I say all of this not having watched more than a couple of episodes of Making the Cut.
Should You Watch It
When I wrote about Next in Fashion for Netflix Hidden Gems I said that fans of Project Runway and Great British Bake-off would like this show and I stand by that. It’s fun to see creative people create things. It’s low-key and relaxing, who couldn’t use a show that doesn’t take a ton of focus right now.
Caution: Cliffhanger
It’s a reality show! They crowned a winner, so you don’t have to worry about a cliffhanger. Isn’t that a nice change of pace? Next in Fashion has an ending, because that is the nature of competition reality shows.
Where to Watch it
Netflix! I wrote about Next in Fashion being one of the hidden gems on the streaming service. Check it out and then watch the other shows I wrote about like Hap and Leonard or Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated.
Check out my thoughts on other shows Gone Too Soon: Hannibal, Galavant, No Tomorrow, Class, Dallas, Jericho, Deception, Take Two, Deadly Class, Whiskey Cavalier, Ravenswood, iZombie, Daybreak, Stitchers, and Eye Candy.
