Outlander Season 6 marks a new beginning of sorts for Jamie and Claire Fraser, and for their family. That’s always been the story of Outlander, after all, that of these two people and the family they’ve built around them, one that hasn’t always been made up of actual blood relations, but that has always been bound together by love and trust.
That’s still at the center of a show that’s got enough to satisfy fans of the books, but that will still introduce some new ideas and new plotlines that will surprise even those that know, in general terms, where this story is heading. Outlander’s adaptation has been both very faithful, and very adept at change in ways other adaptations haven’t exactly been, and Season 6 feels like the confirmation of this concept.
Perhaps, because this is no Game of Thrones. The source material is still there. There’s no vague ending with no idea of how to get there to decode. Instead, there are detours that might be taken along the way, but all while following a clearly mapped out path.
With all of that in mind, here are some teases for Outlander season 6:
- Though this is set to be a shorter season, the episodes are jam-packed, and longer than usual.
- A Claire subplot introduced early in the season is one of the best decisions this show has made – and not just because it allows Caitriona Balfe a chance to show us her range as an actress, but there’s that too.
- Jamie and Claire get good couple time in the first few episodes – something much needed, because this show is still, first and foremost, about them.
- But there’s also a lot of plot-centered scenes, particularly in the premiere.
- There’s more Fergus in early Season 6 than there’s been for a good couple of seasons. That’s always a good thing in my book.
- Marsali gets a fair amount of screen time, too, also something very welcome.
- They’re both gonna need a lot more.
- Sometimes one word means everything. Sometimes, it means family.
- Ian and Jamie get one of the funniest scenes in early season 6, and we can just imagine it was the kind of scene they needed quite a few takes to get right.
- I have never cheered for Roger as much as I did at one point in the first two episodes. I have also never been as proud of him as I feel right now.
- Roger and Brianna seem about as solid as they can be.
- Coming into this with book knowledge will mean some opinions about the newcomers, but there will be opinions even if you’re coming in blind, and those opinions might just coincide.
