Our obsession isn’t in finding the treasure, but the journey it takes to get to the treasure. National Treasure: Edge of History has us on the edge of our seats, tugging at our heartstrings, and has us taking a lot of interest in history.
The show picks up right where we left off – well, clue wise that is. Jess is trying to decipher clues, but she’s still perplexed. The clue makes absolutely no sense to us, but saying that I will have to admit to Miss Allen that I didn’t pay attention in a lot of history class.
“The twin-tongued serpent’s tail is revealed in fair weather by the bend in the new found land.”
Seriously, do you get that? If you say you do, you a damn lie. And hey, that’s fine. You do you. But I am going to admit I can barely solve a crossword puzzle and definitely can’t solve this one.
Jess and Tasha are hanging out when Liam messages Jess a guess about the clue, but when Tasha makes a comment about it is when Jess starts to feel a little uncomfortable. Jess and Liam definitely have a chemistry that is happening here and we’re for it. Jess being nervous about him asking her anything or wanting to hangout is all of us. How do you tell if something is a date or not?
I am going to go with if it’s to a wake, it’s not a date. And if he’s inviting your best friends too, not a date. Jess and Tasha wanting to pass up on it, but then not being able to, because Oren would still go… well, a wake it is.
Liam doesn’t want to just be him with his Mom and a bunch of FBI agents. I get that. I wouldn’t want to either. As a matter of fact, I would probably have invited my worst enemy to a funeral to not have to deal with people I didn’t want to. We could reminisce about hating each other, my enemy and me.
I was glad that the team showed up for Liam. He needs good friends and I am a believer in fate. So, do I believe that everything has fallen into place for Jess and Liam to meet? Yes. Do I believe that this started way before they were born? Yes. Am I aware they are fictional people. Yes. But as long as I am not pissing in your cheerios, don’t piss in mine.
We knew that it would only be a matter before we got to see some more of the characters from the original series, and we’re glad that it’s Riley Poole. Don’t get me started on how he’s the underdog from the originals series, but deserves more credit. He’s definitely had all his dreams come true but it’s Riley, so we know that he wants more. Ben and Abigail may be content, but the best times of Riley’s life came when finding the National Treasure.
It’s why you can see how excited that he is when Jess asks him about the clue. He wants to figure out the clue, but when he can’t on his own, you see a little defeat on his face. Riley heads inside and texts Ben, but it’s his own want to hold onto this need for people to know who he is, to respect him reigns supreme, and when he sees a copy of his book in a foreign language on Sadusky’s shelf, he tries to pull it out, but it ends up opening the secret room.
Meanwhile, Oren had left the wake to go get his Riley Poole books and returns to the wake with Ethan and his girlfriend in tow. Now, I wanna like Ethan (I don’t) but I think that he’s being taken advantage of by this girl and she’s definitely up to something. It’s when the three arrive at the funeral, that Ethan spots a car that had been trailing them last episode, but then they all thought they were wrong.
When Ethan tells the group, Jess goes to tell Liam. You can kinda see a little disappointment on Ethans face, but also, I love it, because it’s a realization to him that this man means something to Jess and he needs to respect that. Ethan kept his relationship private and didn’t tell Jess, but he gets jealous of her having feelings for anyone else? Sorry, not sorry Ethan, I don’t feel bad at all.
Jess finds Riley in Sadusky’s secret room when Riley pics up Ben Franklin’s spectacles and sets off the intruder alarm, locking him and Jess in the room. Sadusky was definitely paranoid and had the place filled with traps and made it so that there was an airtight seal and the air would be sucked out of the room if someone broke in.
Meanwhile, Liam has a talk with his Grandpa’s nurse and ends up performing at the wake. Man, he’s got a voice. Tasha by this time has figured out that Jess is locked in the room and the group is struggling to get her out. Liam is struggling to find a watch that will open the room.
Of course though, even when they barely have any oxygen, Jess and Riley solve the clues to get them out of the room. They also end up solving the clue that the team got at Graceland. What is important at this point though is that Jess and Riley bond and form a trust that we don’t think that anyone will ever be able to break.
Jess and Riley are able to open the door and the group gets them. It’s when Jess and Riley get their bearings that you can see the real difference between Ethan and Liam. Ethan wants to tell Jess not to do and Liam trusts what she tells that she can do.
Ethan may have feelings for Jess, but he’s built his own walls and kept things between them platonic and never taken the chance. I get that is fear, but that doesn’t mean that Jess needs to stop her life for him. That’s not a fair expectation for her.
Did I scream at the TV when Liam kissed Jess and my ship set sail. HELL YES I DID. Thank you to the TV gods for the small things and the big things in life. I appreciate the fact that I didn’t have to wait forever for this.
BUT, I did scream at the TV when Riley called Jess and said that she has to have a leak and may not be able to trust her friends the way she thought. Someone has the Elvis recording and had asked Ben’s Mom about it.
The way she looks up and looks at Liam – as if it’s him, versus thinking okay, Billie’s still got tabs on us, really irritated me. Like she knows better. So what am I missing here? Jess is not the person that would forget that Billie’s got tabs on them. She wouldn’t forget the fact that they were followed. It doesn’t make sense to me.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Billie answering to a board is something I didn’t see coming. I however feel like she may be related to Liam somehow, because she’s got the box that Liam’s Dad had and the board remarked that she had lost her brother in the search for the treasure.
- People I don’t trust – Ethan’s girlfriend
- Agent Ross realizing that she shouldn’t brush off any civilian report… it’s making me think she realizes these kids may know more than she gave them credit for
- Charlotte being a dog that Ben has, when Riley had started talking about Charlotte I thought Ben and Abigail had a baby.
- I don’t trust the FBI head – he seems like he’s up to something
- Tasha is legitimately the best. LOVE HER.
- If I was these guys, I would be going book by book through all of Sadusky’s bookcases. Then again, I would be terrified of what may come out if I pull the wrong book.
Good comments about the charlotte episode. A couple things my 10 year daughter noticed: when looking for Peter’s watch, the first envelope addressed to Liam after his grandfather’s death had a wrapped book that said cras est nostrom or tomorrow is ours, the phase from the boardroom.
The other thing sitting funny with us was Billy’s comment that she lost her brother to this treasure hunt. In combination with Peter Sadusky’s repeatedly saying trust no one, it’s quite possible that Billy is Liam’s aunt or Peter’s daughter. I’m sure we will learn more in the near future but just a couple hints we picked up and wanted to share.
