Chicago P.D. 10×18 “You Only Die Twice” is an episode that sets up the season-ending arc, and it does so while drawing a very clear line between the heroes and the villains of this tale. It’s also an episode that cements Burzek as a couple, and as a family unit, just as Adam gets more and more embroiled in an undercover up that could potentially take him away from that family. The thing is, of course, it’s the kind that feels impossible to quit on a good day.
Because what Richard stands for, “the cause” he is fighting for, is not just wrong and evil and frankly, disgusting, it’s also the kind of horrible thing way too many people stand for. And that Chicago P.D. is taking a very firm stand on who the villains of this world are is a very welcome change for a show that has, at times, equivocated in placing blame where blame belongs.
Simply put, there are no two sides to the issue. There is right and there is wrong, plain and simple. The show knows it, even if in real life, a lot of people don’t.
TOGETHER

Kim makes a promise at the beginning of the episode, to herself and to Adam. Whatever’s coming, they’ll handle it together. And in a way, they’ve handled a lot together already — as partners first and as parents now. But together means something different now. Together means in the hard parts and in the fun parts. It means in every sense of the word.
They’ve been here before, these two. But this time, it feels different, it feels like a decision made with eyes wide open. To me, that has always been the height of romance. Not just loving someone, but choosing to continue to love them, day in and day out. Even if it’s hard. No, especially when it is hard. Because you don’t just love the easy parts, you love all of them.
Kim and Adam still need to say it, but we know it. It’s obvious in every second of that morning-after scene, but also in every second they spend together as partners. In the way they care for each other and look out for each other. And though together isn’t a shield against the world, and on TV land, it might actually bring more danger, it’s still great to see, especially considering how long these two have waited.
OKAY, DAD

Makayla calling Adam dad was perfectly casual, in the way a kid would say it. Because for her it is obvious, he is her dad. There doesn’t need to be a big declaration because it is just …facts. Adam is Makayla’s dad. It’s both heartwarming and kinda amazing, especially when we consider the journey of this little girl and the two humans who are lucky enough to be her parents.
It’s also incredibly worrying because everything seems to be going great for Adam and the Burzek family, and we know this show is going to make us worry about someone to end the season — and yes, all signs point to that person being Adam. But in a way, despite the fact that this show always paints Intelligence as the good guys, Chicago P.D. 10×18 “You Only Die Twice” goes a step further and actually makes this one of those cases that no one can really walk away from.
Not if you have a heart. Not if you are a good person. Not if you have a kid you want to grow up in a better world than the one we have. So Adam will try because he has to. The team will do the same. And hopefully, Chicago P.D. understands we need them all in one place on the other side of this. That’s the only outcome we’ll accept.
Things I think I think:
- Adam’s smile when he noticed Kim could power a small town for a month.
- I also truly appreciate his whole “I don’t even care about the case right now I GOT PRIORITIES.”
- Kim being so sure — and so confident he could answer the phone because they could get back to it at any point, that was great too.
- Can anyone really top Makayla’s “okay, dad,” though?
- I cannot even imagine the toll undercover work takes.
- The setup for this episode — and the previous one — screams Adam is going to be in danger come finale time.
- “Get creative” is not the sentence you want to hear coming from a cop.
- Look, I appreciate the Spanish, but why is Torres talking to Kev in Spanish? What did I miss?
- This is a horrible case and I hate every person involved.
- More of Kim and Hailey working together, please.
- LOOK NOTHING CAN HAPPEN TO MAKAYLA, OKAY? OKAY.
- Dumb Dumb was kinda funny.
- “The cause”
- Like, I get what Kev is trying to do but the threat of prison rape is just …yeah, no.
- “Do I really have a choice?”
- “We are making a better world.”
- I’m gonna throw up now.

Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
I agree with a lot of what you said here. I am not completely sure what to make of Samantha Beck. She does not share in her father’s beliefs. This is not to say that she is a good person or someone I have sympathy for because I don’t. That said I think she wants out and I still think she may have thought Adam could be a cop. She followed him after all. She seemed stunned when Adam “killed their accomplice.” She acted as though she was expecting something else. For Makayla’s protection, Adam may have to stay at his undercover apartment going forward which will interrupt the suddenly happy family. I just hope that if someone’s life is in danger at the end of this season, it’s Adam’s and not Kim’s and definitely not Makayla’s.
