The Rookie 6×05, “The Vow,” finds Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford in a tough spot. The previously rock-solid couple has hit more than a few bumps in the road this season. “The Vow” introduces their latest hurdle – Tim’s past coming back to haunt him and Chenford. After Lucy agrees to be honest with Tim about her undercover work on The Rookie 5×21, “Going Under,” Tim struggles to return the favor about some of the darkest parts of his time in the military. The Rookie sets up this heavy revenge plot as a multi-episode arc for Eric Winter’s Tim, meaning it will also be a multi-episode arc for Melissa O’Neil’s Lucy.
Before all that tension, “The Vow” offers a silver lining by confirming Tim Bradford’s love language – “terse nods, mainly.” Not only does that action beautifully yet heartbreakingly bookend this episode, but Tim’s terse nods are visible throughout Chenford’s slow-burn romance. From The Rookie 1×11, “Redwood,” to “The Vow,” this show has built a loving pattern of behavior between Tim and Lucy. Terse nods – and a lot of affection, communication, and support – have carried Chenford through some of their most challenging times over the last six seasons. They will make it through this, too.
The Rookie 2×13, “Follow-Up Day,” is a good check-in point for the evolution of Tim’s terse nods to Lucy. “Redwood” is an ice breaker for their dynamic and a memorable introduction of the terse nod, but “Follow-Up Day” sees them in an entirely new and emotionally deeper place. Tim finds Lucy after her near-death experience on The Rookie 2×11, “Day of Death,” and he returns her ring with the evergreen reminder that Lucy is a survivor on The Rookie 2×12, “Now and Then.” Those episodes inspire a noticeable shift in their dynamic; they’re no longer only T.O. and Rookie, and “Follow-Up Day” proves that.
This pivotal episode showcases Tim and Lucy’s investment in one another. “Follow-Up Day” comes after Tim finds Lucy in that barrel. It comes after Lucy takes the time to record audiobooks of an out-of-print book so Tim can study for his sergeant’s exam.
They’ve built something stronger than either of them ever expected, so it comes as a believable yet surprising twist that Tim delays any promotion or move to finish Lucy’s training. This terse nod is a recognition of their mutual investment. It’s an agreement that there is something worth staying for between them, even if it’s mainly professional.
By The Rookie 4×09, “Breakdown,” Tim and Lucy’s relationship is still not romantic, but it’s definitely more personal. Lucy meets Tim’s sister, Genny, and helps them with renovations on their childhood home. Of course, this episode eventually reveals heartbreaking details about Tim’s adolescence with an abusive father, through which Lucy supports Tim.
Still, Lucy is there in the episode’s lighter moments, too. Tim’s terse nod in “Breakdown” feels more like a resignation that Lucy Chen can see right through him. This nod is his version of trying to play it off, but The Rookie makes it evident something is building here.
Suddenly, Tim and Lucy’s connection becomes magnetic, even when they have other significant others. The Rookie 5×06, “The Reckoning,” is a prime example because Lucy goes out of her way to boost Tim’s spirits by searching for his radio. Little does she know he’s going through a break-up and pining for Lucy. Little does Tim know that Lucy may be dating Chris, but she’s starting to realize her feelings for Tim aren’t going away but growing. The tension is so great that Lucy’s boyfriend is the only person capable of breaking through it. It’s top-tier Chenford angst that culminates in one of Tim’s terse nods.
All of Tim’s short yet meaningful nods pack an extra special punch in retrospect, but this one is specifically sweet. It feels like a “thank you” that is almost too intimate to say aloud – yet. There is so much unspoken between Tim and Lucy leading up to “The Reckoning.”
So many subtle shifts in their dynamic make their feelings for each other aware to everyone but the other. It’s impactful that one of the next of Tim’s terse nods comes in The Rookie 5×09, “Take Back,” after Lucy assures Tim that she wants to be with him. It almost parallels “Follow-Up Day” in how it reaffirms Tim and Lucy’s investment.
But, the critical difference is that the feelings involved have changed so much since then – from Season 3 to Season 5. Professional feelings morphed into personal ones that evolved into romantic feelings, and Tim’s terse nods have changed alongside them.
Prior to “The Vow,” that evolution is most notable on The Rookie 6×02, “The Hammer.” Tim Bradford delivers his best terse nod yet during his love confession to Lucy Chen.
The words are already enough. They’re a lot. They’re everything after five seasons of a slow-burn romance. Not to mention, it’s always lovely when TV remembers that romance isn’t dead. Romantic relationships don’t have to weaken characters; they can strengthen them. The Rookie sees that in Tim and how he becomes more vulnerable through his relationship with Lucy. All of that is meaningful, but “The Vow” makes this scene even better by realizing that Lucy knows that “terse nods, mainly,” are Tim’s love language.
So, in that scene, Tim Bradford is saying, “I love you,” to Lucy Chen and he’s showing it.
Understanding that makes Chenford’s final scene in “The Vow” all the more effective and heartbreaking. Rightfully and understandably, Lucy sets her boundaries because Tim isn’t able or willing to tell her the truth at that moment. She asks him to leave, but as he says, “Understood,” Tim gives Lucy another one of those classic, Tim Bradford terse nods. Even though the moment isn’t right to say “I love you,” Tim shows it. Even though Tim’s past is likely to drive a larger wedge between Chenford before it doesn’t, there’s no denying that these two characters love each other, which will pull them through in the end.
