We’ve reached the final stretch of the show! Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” is one of the best episodes of the series and one of the most emotional. They went for our souls and… they got them. Time for review!
Here we go!
Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” begins with a scene between father and daughter, and a more relaxed conversation, after the end of the previous episode. However, Rory doesn’t open up… with anyone. She is just there, being sarcastic and talking to everyone but without being part of their lives, she is like in a limbo that reminds Lucifer a bit of himself when he started this whole story.
Although things are not as simple as they seem … Rory is dying to be part of the family for real but it is difficult because they just met her, but she … she has a history with all of them, she loves them and wants to tell them everything but she knows that she can’t so she turns away, seeing her family from afar … not feeling part of it, but wanting to be. This is why she declines Lucifer’s invitation.
Later, Rory talks to her mother and the way she fixes on her wings is important. They are weapons … Rory felt that she had to defend herself, protect herself from everyone and everything, that she had to somehow push them away or be ready to defend herself, why? Chloe feels that she has to have failed as a mother if her daughter felt so insecure as to sheathe herself in blades, it is because of something she did … or did not do, what made Rory feel so insecure that she needed to be ready to kill?
But we don’t think that’s the case, Chloe is not to blame for this, it’s just … Rory grew up without her father and that made her feel unworthy of his love, something must have been wrong with her so that her father didn’t love her enough to stay with her. That pain caused her to isolate herself, to create a shell and for her to feel that it was better to be prepared and ready to push away anyone who tried to get too close. Rory felt that the people around her might hurt her and she needed a way not to feel that. It’s terrifying how her story and Lucifer’s are parallel.
Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” introduces us to another well-known biblical character: Adam, the first man and … I wish I had never met him! He is the epitome of toxic masculinity, contrary to what happens with Amenadiel, this man seems more like an animal. He is sexist, misogynist and disgusting. A pig with all the letters. He thinks that Eve is little more than an object of his property, he does not value her or take into account her opinion, her choices, her dreams. This asshole really disgusts me.
But, how could it be otherwise, Adam comes with a lot of problems. The way he compares Maze to Lilith rekindles Maze’s worst fears: becoming her mother. That’s her worst nightmare. To become someone cold, heartless, insensitive, incapable of love, a true demon that only understands power, pain and torture. She is afraid that he is becoming her because she is not… she is not a whole human.
She is a demon and Lilith raised them to hate, even each other, to enjoy the torture, the blood, the suffering of others … and it is so easy to pretend that she is already that person. It is so easy for Maze to try to make Eve believe that she is already her mother… because, for Maze she is seeing the future because that is how she will be, that monster is what she will become. Her sabotage levels rise to the point that she was the one who made sure Adam found out about her wedding with Eve.
As soon as Eve mentioned the possibility of being a mother, Maze closed herself in and began to think, she began to imagine… and she didn’t like what she saw. How can she be a good mother if her own mother did not love her enough to stay with her? All Maze knew of life until she came to Earth was pain, suffering, anger and resentment. How is that material for a good mother? Although, of course, Maze is totally wrong. We are not our parents and Maze followed her own path and loves with all her heart. But she is unable to see herself as she is.
Eve is the only one who sees her, the only one who fights for her, for them, when Maze loses her faith and does these things to destroy herself and destroy them in the process. They are sharing a life and they must be able to talk about their future, their fears, their illusions, their demons … and if they are not capable of that … getting married is pointless. Here our hearts are broken in a thousand pieces … but Eve is right.
Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” is the first time that Maze calls Lucifer for advice, to stop her from killing. Until that moment, she had tried to get what she needed or wanted without his help and when she asked it, it was because she had no choice. Maze thought she didn’t have that right but now she knows she does. He is her friend, her family, he is going to be there for her… and he is the only one who can stop her from doing something stupid.
And Maze wants to do that nonsense more than anything in the world … but at the same time, she knows it would be a mistake and it would not be her. Not anymore. Maze is no longer that demon for whom killing is routine, she is still a demon who loves torture and enjoys it but is also human.
Somehow and without realizing it, Maze lowered her barriers, thawed her heart and people, friends, family, got into it and she began to have a consciousness and stopped being the person she was supposed to be, the demon she was created to be and began to be herself, to walk her own path and discover who she could be, who she wanted to be.
The Maze we met in season 1 of Lucifer would have had no problem killing Adam and enjoying it but she changed, and so she asks Lucifer to help her not to do something that she really doesn’t want to do and which she would later regret. She asked for help not to get carried away by her anger. Maze evolved … but some demons are not so easy to eradicate.
Maze is walking the same path that Lucifer, they were both abandoned children and they both felt that feeling of unworthiness, of self-contempt, they both believed that they were not worthy of love. Lucifer got over this last year but Maze is still dealing with it, which is why she does these crazy things to sabotage her wedding. Although being happy with Eve is what she wants most in the world, she is afraid that Eve will realize that she is too pure, too good, too sweet… to join her life to someone like her. So before Eve breaks her heart, Maze prefers to be the one who takes Eve away from her.
And she does it because Eve can’t be the only one to be there for them and to go forward. Basically, here Eve tells Maze to “fix your shit” and I love that because it’s precisely what Maze needs to realize that she’s letting go of her own happiness. Although Eve must also know why Maze does what she does and the one to explain it is… Lucifer! After all, he was in Maze’s place not long ago.
And I love this conversation. Not only do I love it for what it means to Mazeve but also because we first see Lucifer and Eve together and alone after their relationship. We were really looking forward to a scene between them in 5B and they are paying us a debt.
What I love most about this is that we see Eve and Lucifer for what they always were: friends. Lucifer never wanted to hurt Eve, he truly loves her but he is not her love. And Eve took refuge in Lucifer because she was lost and had not found herself or her way and Lucifer was the only person she knew besides Adam so she went with him … but she did not choose him, they both needed each other at that time for different reasons but they were never right for each other. Eve chose Maze. And Lucifer chose Chloe.
Now, it is Maze who must show Eve that she is there for her, for them and she does it in the most romantic and special way that she could do it. Maze was afraid to talk to her demonic family, she never thought that they would agree to be there for her, she never thought that they would love her enough because they were taught to hate each other, but they are there and it is something that Maze learns when she asks for their help.
Maze brings her family to Eve, proud of the woman she loves, of the woman with whom she is going to share her life, she wants to share with Eve absolutely everything, ugly parts included. Maze is letting Eve in here, she is letting her into the depths of her, she is letting her see that abandoned girl who always needed the love of her mother, who always needed to feel loved and feel that she deserved that love. Maze is letting Eve see her scars, her wounds that are still bleeding, her heart. Waiting… just waiting for Eve to accept her.
And she promises to be better, she promises to heal those wounds, she promises not to be carried away by the fear of becoming her mother because sometimes it is easier to pretend that she already did and protect herself from the pain because Maze, deep down, always expects something go wrong, she always expects a hit, always expects to suffer. But Eve doesn’t want that, she wants this. Maze being herself, trusting her to take care and help heal her wounds, trusting Eve to see her.
It is the moment in which in Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” we get to the…MAZEVE WEDDING! It’s… it’s beautiful, we haven’t been able to stop crying the whole time. Everything has such a precious symbolism, it’s so emotional… it’s so beautiful it hurts. Linda is the one who walks Maze down the aisle and that’s… perfect. Linda was her first friend and, in a sense, like a mother to her because she guided her in a new world, in a new life, taught her to walk among humans and to accept who she really is.
Eve, for her part, is going down the aisle alone and it’s just how she was supposed to be. It is the symbol of Eve’s choice. She doesn’t need anyone to walk beside her anymore, she stands up by herself, walks by herself. She chooses her own path and she, and only she, will follow it. Eve fought for this, to have a choice and to find out who she was without Adam and without Lucifer.
And the vows, goodness, the vows. Eve opens up to Maze. She sees her, no matter how many barriers Maze tries to put up, she knows that Maze feels unlovable, that she sees herself as a monster and that she has a hard time believing that anyone loves her but she is going to fight to help Maze see herself as she really is, as Eve sees her. As for Maze, her vows are short but just as significant as Eve’s.
Maze never told anyone that she loved him/her, never. She just couldn’t say it, no … she didn’t feel like she could do it, she didn’t know what it meant to love, but Eve taught her the meaning of love, taught her how to love so, yes, she loves Eve, she loves her so much, she loves her with everything she has and that’s the most beautiful thing she could have said.
But not everything could be happiness, Rory is angry because, against her better judgment, the hope that she did not want to feel won out and she trusted Lucifer, that he was going to be there, waiting for her … but he is not, never is. And she can’t stand it, she’s mad at herself for believing in him, mad at him for not being there, but most of all, she feels disappointed … and betrayed.
Rory never had Lucifer and she thought no one had him because he was never there for anyone who mattered since she could remember. He wasn’t even on Chloe’s deathbed … but she just found out that he was there for Trixie. He played with her, spent time with her, acted like her father. And Rory can only think: “why her and not me?” And the answer comes to her head quickly “because I’m no one special.” And she complains that, even so, her mother always defends him, always chooses him.
Of course, Lucifer is confused because he doesn’t understand what is happening and the truth is that he has a very good excuse for why he was not – and we hope he also has it for the small detail that he was not on Chloe’s deathbed – and, the truth is that, playing devil’s advocate here (pun intended), Lucifer did not think that Rory was going to go to the tailor, although, for an abandoned girl who takes that small step of trusting her father when he tells her that he will be there even if she doesn’t go, Rory’s anger is logical.
And Lucifer doesn’t know what to do. He seems to take one step forward and two steps back and he doesn’t know how to show Rory that he loves her and that he doesn’t know what happened but that the last thing he would do is leave her, leave them. This is when we start crying again.
In Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” Trixie finally has some prominence and they stop wasting her so blatantly. I have been moved by her gestures between her and Maze, nostalgia is the word because this takes us back to the first seasons and that little nod to the Deckerstar wedding… yeah, baby! Trixie always on my team.
In Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” Ella and Carol become more and more serious but for Ella it is difficult at this time to formalize a relationship with him after discovering the truth. She is at a crossroads here. She feels that she cannot tell him what is happening to her because a) he would believe that she is crazy and b) she would go crazy. Also, Ella doesn’t feel like it’s her secret to tell. And that’s only a tenth of what she feels.
She feels betrayed, disappointed, left out, she feels as if everyone has cast her aside, as if they have not considered that she was trustworthy enough to know the truth. These people are her friends, they are part of her family, she considers them that way. And she is disappointed that they don’t feel the same way about her. She feels cheated and this has broken her heart into a thousand pieces.
How would she have reacted to the truth? Well, surely better than all the others because she already believed in the existence of heaven, hell, angels and demons and this is one of the things that hurts her the most, that knowing her beliefs, even her crisis of faith, they were not able to trust her enough to confess what was going on. To be thought so unimportant that they didn’t even bother to tell her about it when everyone else knew and she was the only one who didn’t. That makes her feel like a real idiot.
And we understand Ella so much… they, all of them, have witnessed Ella’s worst moments and could have comforted and helped her in a way that no one else could but they chose not to and the excuses for why don’t hold up. They took a chance with everyone else, why not with Ella? After all, she’s already involved in all that madness. So yes, Ella has every right to feel hurt and betrayed, with a broken heart and a dagger in her heart.
All this explodes in the most inappropriate place but it is also understandable. It’s that feeling of not being able to hold it in anymore because you feel like you’re drowning and you can’t breathe… so you have to let it go. And it is sad, really sad that they have not been able to show her how important she’s to them … and maybe now there is no time because the world is ending! Or not?
Dan, for his part, is going through his own ordeal. While being a ghost gives him the opportunity to be at the Mazeve wedding and talk to his closest friends, Trixie can’t see or hear him, having her so close yet so far away is … it’s torture, it’s his own hell and he’s angry and frustrated with the world for the injustice of it all, just like us. That his daughter is growing up without him is already unfair enough but that they cannot meet now, be together even for just a moment … although it would not be enough. Nothing would be.
In the midst of all this madness, in Lucifer 6×07 “My Best Fiend’s Wedding” Chloe realized the mistake she made by trusting the system so much, it turns out there are a lot of asshole racists the system has kept in the police force and even promoted. She becomes an ally of Amenadiel to try to stop this and we are super proud of her because we are sure that it is not easy for her to turn “against” what is part of her and in some way represents her father but she does partly because of that too; Chloe knows that her father would not have supported this corrupt and unjust system and would have fought against it just like her.
The system has disappointed her, the police force has disappointed her, but she still believes in it and believes that they can do great things with a really fair system. The only bad thing about this is that it is something she does not say to Lucifer… at the moment. I understand the premise that he is already very overloaded with everything else but I thought we were done with these secrets and these omissions. Wasn’t that what they promised each other in episode 4? Wasn’t that Chloe’s anger at Lucifer? They are a team, they are sharing a life together and these vital decisions shouldn’t be kept secret, even if the intentions are good.
