Lucifer is back! Episode 6×01 “Nothing Ever Changes Around Here” introduces us to the final season in a brilliant way. It’s a transition episode, but one that introduces the plots to develop this season, the emotional conflicts of the characters and new mysteries. Ready?
Here we go!
In Lucifer 6×01 “Nothing Ever Changes Around Here” Chloe struggles with her decision not to be a detective. As we discussed before, we have mixed feelings about it and in this episode we see that, perhaps, her decision was not the right one, because being a detective is not something that Chloe does, it’s who she is and you cannot stop being who you are.
This is why she does her best to be present and be part of the investigation, as before, as always. But … it’s not like before. She retired and that is not her place now, the investigation is not her thing. She makes it so because, deep down, she misses it, she misses that part of herself that she gave up — she wants to get it back as much as possible, but she also wants to be there for Lucifer, because Chloe is clear that they are completely together in whatever comes.
Chloe understands that being there for Lucifer is incompatible with continuing as a detective and she doesn’t regret having given up that part of herself for him, but she wants to take advantage of the time they still have on Earth to enjoy that part of herself, just one last time until she has to give it up forever. Good thing Carol saw what was happening and let her participate.
However, Chloe isn’t a fool and she knows that as much as she is delaying leaving Earth, Lucifer is also delaying but why? Chloe is always able to see through Lucifer.
She sees through his half-truths, his evasions, his sarcasms, his armor … it is as if she sees him through a clear glass, it is so obvious to her, she is the only one who sees him, that’s why she knows that there is much more to this than he acknowledges. And she just wants him to know that she is there, he is not alone, no more.
As always, Chloe is right. Lucifer is struggling with being God. That thing he says to the murderer: “you are not worthy of your father’s legacy,” a part of him feels that, he is not worthy of being God because he doesn’t know how to do it. But there’s another, large part of him that understands that being God is not like being a police consultant, it’s a job that will occupy all his time and where does that leave his relationship with Chloe? This is a reflection of the doubts that Chloe had in 5B.
Lucifer, although he is reluctant to accept this himself, is realizing that becoming God may have been a mistake. But where Lucifer lacks faith, Chloe has it, for him, for them. It’s amazing the way she believes in him, the way she trusts him blindly. Everyone seems to be waiting for Lucifer to make a mistake, but not Chloe, she knows that in the end they will solve all issues and Lucifer only needs time to figure out how but, in the end, he will, she is sure of it.
Chloe supports him with everything, till the end. He is no longer alone, she is by his side, holding his hand, through everything. And Lucifer knows it, he kisses her and he still can’t believe what he did to make someone so good, so pure, love him in such an unconditional way … they love each other, they love each other so much.
It almost seems funny that Lucifer couldn’t say the words before and now he says them so naturally, so clearly, so fully, so confidently. It is as natural as breathing because loving her, having her there next to him is like that. They fit together in a way that is difficult to put into words, both physically and emotionally. That is why Lucifer closes his eyes in that kiss, letting himself be carried away by what he feels, being carried away by what they have, by that connection so strong, so unbreakable, so pure that neither of them had experienced before.
And for someone like Lucifer, who has always seen the worst in human beings and thought the worst in himself, who has always been a child desperately in need of someone to love him unconditionally, this connection he has with Chloe, this love, it’s like his little miracle and he’s going to do everything in his power to keep it. He is willing to sacrifice everything… except her, except them. If he needs to choose between being God and Chloe, his choice is clear.
It was always her. It’s always her. It will always be her.
The uncertain future is spinning in Lucifer’s head, so he goes to see Dan in hell. He is hopeful that he will soon be able to get Dan out of there and into heaven, but it has not been easy. Lucifer can’t get Dan over his guilt, only Dan can do that. And Dan is angry, frustrated, enraged. They are not physically torturing him but what is happening is emotional torture… knowing that he is so close but so far from where he should be.
So Dan is done, he doesn’t want to do this again. He doesn’t want to see Lucifer again until he can really help him. And I understand it. I think he is partly right. Lucifer can’t make Dan get over his guilt, but he can help him understand where he came from and start from there. Saying that he can’t help him is not the solution and the truth is that Lucifer here should have his friend’s back more.
Of course, it’s not something Lucifer is purposely avoiding, it just isn’t something that has occurred to him yet but… I can perfectly understand Dan’s frustration and anger at Lucifer and this whole situation. Hell, I too feel frustrated and angry at the world for this.
On the other hand, Lucifer 6×01 “Nothing Ever Changes Around Here” gives us a wonderful gift: a MAZEVE ENGAGEMENT! And it’s gorgeous and I love them and they’re so cute. Although things have not been a bed of roses to get there. Everything started really happy, Maze was going to be Queen of Hell and Eve was going to be with her, but Linda pushes, as she senses that Eve needs to find her own place beyond being with Maze — she must find a way for herself. This is a bit of a reflection of what’s going on with Deckerstar and Chloe.
And when it seems like Eve finally manages to figure out what she’s going to do in hell, Maze vetoes all of her ideas. It’s as if Maze wants to have her in a golden cage, protected from everything and everyone but… extremely alone. One of the reasons Eve decided to get away from Lucifer and everyone in season 4 was because she felt that she had been living a life always run by others, she was only by and for others.
Eve did not feel that she was her own person, that she followed her own path, she felt as if she were an extension of Adam, then Lucifer … and now Maze. She doesn’t want to feel that again because her relationship with Maze is not like that. And Maze… she’s so scared. Scared about Eve meeting her family and scared that through them, Eve will realize that she deserves much better and will leave her. That’s the crux of the matter: Maze, like Lucifer before, doesn’t feel worthy of Eve, though of course she is.
In the end, this emotional conflict reveals that neither of them wants to go to hell. Without realizing it, they were both doing this, sacrificing themselves for what they thought the other wanted. Eve was willing to go to hell because she thought it was what Maze wanted and Maze wanted to do it because she thought about how proud Eve was that she was queen and she didn’t want to disappoint her. Feeling unworthy again, Maze thought saying “no” to this would be disappointing Eve and it would make her feel that she deserved more than Maze.
But there is nothing further from the truth. Eve loves Maze just the way she is, she knows Maze, down to the parts that Maze considers ugliest about her and the best part is that Maze feels the same about Eve. They are engaged, there is no question about that so why not make it official? They do it!
So this engagement is so… them. So spontaneous, so crazy, so natural, so… perfect. Really perfect. It is only what they feel, they have suffered so much in their long lives … that when you know that you have found the right person, when you are so sure, there is no more to say, why wait?
And a special note to Maze that ever since she came to earth she always wanted to go back to hell, which she considered her home, she fought for it and now she has realized that her home is where she lives, where the people she loves are. Her friends, her family, the love of her life… going to hell no longer feels like going home, she feels like leaving her true home. Character growth that makes me cry …
Linda’s work with the heavenly family is unpaid, but it is also difficult for her to go from dealing with heavenly and angelic problems to dealing with more mundane problems again. Linda likes the adrenaline rush, the challenge of dealing with this dysfunctional heavenly family, she loves how fast her heart gets when she feels like the world is going to end and she is on the team that will save it.
There is something that hooks her to that tension, to that adrenaline and to return to the way things were before … she simply cannot, it is not for her anymore … so when she sees some heavenly problem, she cannot avoid pushing and pushing.
Amenadiel tries to point this out, and his words are rational but what Linda feels is not, and you can’t control how you feel. Linda is a bit us, when Lucifer is gone, we will miss what only this show can make us feel. Although we are sure that Linda has nothing to worry about because she will still have family and heavenly problems to solve for a while.
Final kudos to Carol because he’s winning my heart, he’s super cute. And kudos too to that opening of “Nothing Ever Changes Around Here” because it is a clear nod to the pilot with Lucifer driving his Corvette and explaining what the devil does on earth. This journey is almost over …
And now, that final scene. Who is it that sits on the throne of Lucifer? We don’t know who it may be but her smile doesn’t promise anything good … that, coupled with the fact that Ella has felt that there is no one up there, is going to bring us many headaches for sure.
